Photo and words by @mishkusk (Michaela Skovranova) | Australian sea lions are some of the most inquisitive and intelligent creatures I have ever had the privilege to share the ocean with. They are the rarest of the seal species in Australian waters and amongst the rarest in the world - It is hard to believe that there may only be about 12 000 left in the wild. They are playful, curious, wild and they explode with energy and excitement. There is so much wonder in their eyes. They have very unique breeding habits with mothers returning to their place of birth to give birth making generations of sea lions and their babies extremely reliant on a healthy ecosystem of their birthplace. Their breeding sites are fragile environments which are very sensitive to human disturbances, pollution and other factors. Sharing the ocean with them has been a beautiful way to learn about their lives and our impact on their home.
