While #PalmDreams is indeed amazing for the most part — ‘Mean 2 U’ is one track on the album that took me awhile to appreciate. To be honest, I wasn’t quite into the song when I first listened to it because I felt (I still slightly do) that it’s a bit disjointed... In other words, there’s sort of a lack of harmony between the verses and chorus.
Don’t get me wrong, overall the track is lit (duh!). The only one faulty thing I find about it is; the track sounds as if it’s made up of two (or more) different songs being jumbled up together... I actually feel the song would be better off without the existing chorus. Also, it would be better if the bridge/pre-chorus (the part that goes: “ʏᴏᴜ ᴀɪɴ‘ᴛ ɢᴏᴛᴛᴀ sᴀʏ ɪᴛ / ɪ ᴊᴜsᴛ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ᴀᴘᴘʀᴇᴄɪᴀᴛᴇ ɪᴛ...) became the chorus instead...
Nevertheless, lately I’ve been listening to the track on repeat — as there is undeniably something compelling about it that makes it grow on you... And Kiana’s verse is so awesome, which is the best part of the song for me... Plus the continuation of the verse - where James comes in, then he and Kiana alternate and exchange lines with each other - is just cool and addictive AF.
