54 years ago today, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Carol Denise McNair were killed when the KKK bombed their church. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. described this attack as "one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity." Even though the FBI concluded the bombing was carried out by 4 known Klansmen, no prosecutions ensued until 1977. In fact, one of the men was never charged for his alleged involvement. This tragedy marked a turning point in the Civil Rights movement, and contributed to support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, lets remember these innocent girls who were taken too soon because of hate. Lets love each other and remember our history, or be doomed to repeat it.
