Malasana or Squat is one of my favourite restorative poses. My life got quite demanding since I returned from holiday. Worries, time-critical and unexpected tasks are keeping me busy. I won’t break but I need to take care of myself. Balance is the key, right? Always! I like what my teacher said: „Every posture has a certain mood to it. If you're only practicing stimulating postures i.e. backbends, handstands, and the like, you'll eventually blow a fuse. Be sure to include stable, integrated, closed circuit, low to the ground postures as well.“.

"How to… Funky Eka Pada Bak“
.
After yesterday’s post I thought it would be helpful for some of you to see a progression chart on how to get into it. It’s not that difficult but of course you need some #strength, #flexibility and I would say some crow and pincha experience. This is not necessarily a beginners pose but … This teenage #EkaPadaBakasana is THE pose which gave me the grown up version. So, in a sense it IS a pose to begin with.

🎬SLIDE 1
1️⃣ Start with one arm down; place one hand at a level with your elbow. Your hands and your elbow are creating a TRIANGLE
2️⃣ lift your bum and place the right knee right ABOVE your elbow. Your knee will fit perfectly into that little dent between bone and soft tissue
3️⃣ LIFT that heel to your bum (activation of the leg)
4️⃣ SHIFT your weight onto that elbow so your hip, knee, wrist is in line (perpendicular)
5️⃣ Find your balance and lift the other leg; bring both feet / knees together FIRST
6️⃣ Slowly start to raise that other leg whilst pushing away the floor with your hand and forearm
.
🎬SLIDE 2 (same as Slide 1 but a different angle)
1️⃣ PLACING of the hands and elbow in an equilateral triangle
3️⃣ still BOTH feet on the floor
4️⃣ SHIFT of weight (for me that was the key to this pose 🤓)
.
🖍 NOTES
❗️stay 5 full breaths in each step, get out and repeat the steps as often as you need to find control, balance and therefore safety. Only then go ahead to the next step.
❗️always find your BALANCE first
❗️Gaze forward, ALWAYS
.
🔺I never had any severe bloopers with this pose (not even funny ones😜) so I dare to say this is sth you can’t fall out. BUT… there is always a but, right? If you tend to do these kind of poses only on one side you will overtax your strong side and shoulder a lot. Your ‚strong‘ side will become your weak side! I felt it mostly in the shoulder of the funky arm. Please do yourself a favour and switch sides OFTEN while practicing these uneven poses.

Day 5 is any one handed #Inversion

🤣Did you wonder if and when this day will come? We didn’t forget, we kept it for the second to last day 😎. Did I just say second to last day??? 😱 I can't believe it. Time flies when you have fun, right? ❤️.
.
❗️Here a friendly reminder: What is an inversion? An inversion is EVERY pose where your heart is over your head, where your bum is over your shoulders, where you are upside down. This can be a Handstand, a Headstand, a Forearm Stand, a Chin Stand, a Shoulder Stand of course. BUT also ⏩ Bridge Pose, Downward Facing Dog, Dolphin, , Wheel Pose, a Forward Fold, Plow Pose or even a Crow Pose (that one is tricky on one hand and is called Air Baby … just saying 😉). The only requirement we have today is: Use ONE hand only! 😎).

I saw this shape with the ever so amazing @riva_g_ 🙏🏼. I got into it with a regular tripod, tried it exactly 3 times, stayed in it only a few breaths. Imho no one should hold tripods for longer than that. It’s such a high pressure on the neck and it's not recommended to hold it for longer time 🚫.
.
🔹Set up for tripod, walk out one hand BEFORE you get up, get on your fingertips
🔹Find your straight up tripod; BEND one knee
🔹Breathe, suck in your belly, rib cage, everything
🔹USE your quads as if you want to pull up your knee cap
🔹Imagine someone is pulling you UPWARDS
🔹find your BALANCE; lift the other hand
🔹come down and REST in Child’s Pose
🔹BE a good screen grabber 😝.

‼️NOTES
🔺NEVER kick up into headstand
🔺Use a spotter (or a wall an arm length away from your back)
🔺come out of the pose BEFORE you need a rest
❌ If you have chronic neck issues please do another inversion of your choice

😳Today’s pose got me a bit under pressure. Normally I get my pics for a challenge done and ready before the challenge starts. But Universe decided to throw not only a stone but a huge rock my way so I couldn’t get them all done during the last two weeks 🙈. So I had to „wait“ for the perfect opportunity. Backbends don’t come easy to me and need a long warm up. Add the needed cooperation of my spine, my hip flexors, my shoulders and you’ll get a delay 😩. I was so happy when I felt that ease with my wheels yesterday. You know a good day when it's there, right? 😉 I played a bit with this and that and got this. I’m sure it’s nothing new but I never tried it and I’m quite pleased with it 😍.

🗝 The key to get on one hand in Full Wheel is to shift the weight properly so your shoulder is in line with your elbow and wrist. Play with a one handed down dog to figure out how much you have to shift your weight for counter balance. Plank works great for this, too.
.
❗️Please warm up properly. Shoulder & hip openers, work your hip flexors and hamstrings (suggested poses pls see my next-to-last post).

Thought I post a progress pic of my Pigeon journey. All pics are taken in July or August so it’s almost a year in between and you can see how my edits changed over the years 🎨 (I mention this solely because I got some comments or DMs over the past days talking about this 😍).

Only in 2015 I started to practice Full Wheels on a daily basis, and in 2016 I found out that I can flip the grip. I was chuffed and utterly astonished because I didn’t expect it at all. I couldn't believe it and thought it was a one hit wonder. But every time I tried it it happened again. I like how much „rounder“ my 2017 pigeon is this year. The crease at waistline is not as deep as it was last year YAY.

I work on my pigeon (regular and a twisty variation) every day. Not necessarily on flipping the grip, though. Maybe I should 🤔 but right now I focus on my hip flexors. This collage makes me super excited to see them finally moving 🤣.

Patience and endurance are paying off. Even when you think nothing happens at all. Some things are always shifting and moving. Trust in the process!!! Happy Thursday, sweet IG friends ❤️.

❤️Happy Hump Day, Lovers. We celebrate it with one of the most beautiful poses.
.
❗️Because it is so important we ask you to warm up properly for this deep and intense pose. Add some shoulder & hip openers, work your hip flexors and hamstrings. Bound Angle, Low Lunge, any variation of Forward Fold, Hero Pose or Reclined Hero Pose, Bridge Pose, Camel Pose or Full Wheel are really great to add to your regular practice. Personally I like to twist a lot, too 🌀.
.
🙏🏼 Please choose a variation that suits you. Some days are better back bend days then others. Use a strap, a block, a blanket under your pelvis if needed 🔗.
.
Some hints to get into it:
.
The Pigeon
🔹keep your front leg on the outer side of your mat (outside of your wrist)
🔹front foot in extension of your shin (no matter if your shin is parallel to the front or not)
🔹Back leg is in extension of your spine
🔹Bend your back leg
🔹Reach back with your palm up and grab the foot
.
The Flip (use a strap if needed)
🔹Imagine you shoulder a backpack. That’s the move of your arm & shoulder
🔹Bend your arm; Move your elbow to your waist, revolve further to the front and then up to the sky
🔹Raise your other arm; Bring your hands together; Elbows in front of your forehead
🔹„scissor“ your knees (back knee pulls to the front, front knee pulls back)
🔹Lift your sternum, your pubic bone moves forward; Extend your front body
.
By using a strap your body gets familiar with the flip and creates #musclememory (although you might not have the range yet).

HarHarHarrrrr we got you, right? Our flyer was deceeeeiving, I know 😂. It was so much fun to read some of the captions yesterday telling us how surprised you were that it’s not about an abstract, artsy fartsy editing challenge. You are very welcome, you awesome people. The first day was already amazing. I had no idea how many different chair poses you can come up with. LOVE it, and please keep it coming ❤️.

🤓Today I learned from Alli that a regular Tiger pose is done with one lifted leg only. Both hands stay on the mat. Who Knew? Not me. So basically the Tiger Pose we know from the gram is an Eka Hasta Vyaghrasana or One Handed Tiger 🐯.

🙈Anyone else here not knowing exactly which hand should grab which ankle? Every time I wonder which one is right. But you know what? I don't care. Some days I like to grab the foot on the same side, some days I prefer to grab the opposite ankle .. and all of a sudden life get's easier 😜.
.
I decided to skip the hand and put mine onto the elbow. My take for today's pose is inspired by the one and only @mirajfindingbalance. If you don't know this cool guy head over to his feed to check him out. You will find some poses telling yourself "ah, maybe next lifetime". Then there are some poses you know will be difficult and then you see the poses where your naïve self tells you "aaaaaah, yes, THAT I can do" 🤣. .
