.Nervously waiting for the result of this horrid popular vote on the fundamental rights of the LGBTIQ community. The debate has been farcical and a mockery of democracy. If Yes gets up, let’s keep the momentum up and press our Government to put the right amendments through. If it’s a no, it’s crushing, but we won’t give in. We’ll keep fighting for change, as hard as it is. LGBTIQ of Australia - be bold, be dignified, be you. Lots of love from Tokyo

I was up by 2am to secure one of the coveted spots to watch the 6am tuna auction at Tsukiji Fish Market. When it was time to weave our way over through the organised chaos of the market to the auction halls, the mix of cold, hunger and weariness quickly dissipated in anticipation of the spectacle ahead. Inside the icy auction hall, the sales were well under way with 1000 fish to be sold that morning. The auctioneer’s voice rang out clear, as the bidders swooped around the frozen tuna laid out on the concrete. Weighing up to 300kg, each fish had been tailed, a marbled pink cross section perched on top for inspection. As one of the nakaoroshi (intermediary wholesalers) had explained to us earlier, the bidders would assess the fish based on size and shape, on the texture and oiliness of the little chunks of flesh hacked from the tail, from the colour of the flesh held up to a torchlight. The tuna had been sourced globally, the prized ones from off the north coast of Japan. A prized tuna could fetch as much as $1m USD. But it was always a risk as the assessment is more of an art. Once a fish was bought, the skin was daubed with a red dye and quickly hauled off on a cart to be cut up and on-sold. My mind couldn’t avoid wondering about sustainability issues and some of the more infamous practices of the Japanese fishing industry. In the end, the experience was a fascinating peak into Tsukiji and well worth the early start and wait

So many times I’ve felt like I’m walking through the set of a Miyazaki animation. Wishful thinking. Here’s the corridor of bamboo at Arashiyama in Kyoto🎋

Mayumi-san runs her old-school cafe with the sort of mechanical precision you only get from 33 years of trade. You walk in and she motions you to a spot between two customers. Curls of cigarette smoke rise from behind their morning broadsheets. Light jazz plays in the background.
Slight of build, her jagged hair an array of grey and black, Mayumi-san is instantly likeable. Behind the three-sided counter she is the maestro. My entrance has disturbed the equilibrium of coffee siphons she has on the go. Throwing another one on, she whizzes from one station to the next: “Cold brew for you”; “Here’s your toast, did you want another coffee?”; “I’ve let your water run out, let me get you some more.” All the while she’s carrying on with a couple of regulars. Between the ebb and flow of customers and cleaning up, she leans back against the shelf and puffs away at a cigarette pipe. “Where are you from?” she said, dropping a coffee in front of me. “Australia, just in Kyoto for another two days”. From there we struck up a conversation, with great patience on her part in deciphering my broken Japanese. She pulled out a map and magazines to show me where to go and (along with the regulars) scoffed at my plans to walk to Fushimi Inari. “Shinimasu”, they said, “You’ll die trying.” Later I was folding origami cranes with another couple of regulars. “He’s going to try and walk to Fushimi Inari!” The couple joined in the chorus of laughter.
Walking into the cafe this morning, she guessed I didn’t walk to Fushimi Inari. “How did you know?” I asked. “Shinanakatta kara, Macho Yi-chan .” Because you didn’t die. Thanks Mayumi-san

Another long day of walking around Kyoto, capped off with a 2hr trek up through the famous torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha. The golden light streaming through the vermillion was stunning. It’s only when you turn around that you notice that on the back of each torii the names of the businesses who have donated torii to the shrine in the hope of achieving prosperity. They were endless, and you could see workmen in the process of putting up new torii along some paths. Once I made it to the top of Inari-Yama, I was rewarded with a clear view of the sunset across Kyoto before the descent .

Much larger than I expected, the Majesty of the Golden Pavilion belies the chaos of the crowds jostling on the opposite shore of the lake for the perfect shot. It’s also a lot younger than expected, being rebuilt in 1955 after a fanatic monk torched the original structure which dared back to the late 1300s. I ended up going through the Rokuonji complex twice to wait out the crowds and for the softer afternoon light. Well worth it

A big part of this trip was to take the new camera for a spin and give photography a solid shot. Here’s my first go at shooting flowing water using a Cokin 4 stop ND filter, f/16 ISO 200 for 1 sec

On the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto, you notice that the one constant is the urban sprawl stretching incessantly from one city to the next. It’s the uglier side of Japan and only more stark in the face of this country’s natural beauty, which you are constantly reminded of. Here, the clouds parted, and Fuji emerged like a holy apparition bathed in the setting sun

Arriving in Kusatsu, it was already starting to snow. Immediately I was overwhelmed by the smell of sulphur in the air. I made a beeline for a tattoo-friendly onsen up in the foothills of the surrounding mountains. The snow was heavy by the time I got to the onsen. I immediately stripped off and stepped into the acqua water. It was much hotter than expected but that didn’t stop me from plunging in. The taste of sulphur and metal was overwhelming, my eyes stung from the acid. Once the stinging subsided, I sat back against the rocky edge, towel balanced on my head and took in the wonder of this onsen. Surrounded by a grove of Japanese pine, the mountains ablaze with autumn while the snow and steam swirled around. What better place to contemplate one’s nakedness and the wonder of nature
