i'm so moved and relieved by the overwhelmingly positive response to our #catsnotcopycats post last friday. thank you, thank you, thank you all for the sense of community 🌿(i'm just LOVING the variety of cats under that hashtag!)

let's talk about copycats! πŸ™€ @bodiljane and i have both been dealing with this issue lately, so we wanted to get together and share our thoughts:

say you're browsing through another artist's portfolio and feel inspired to create. borrowing some stylistic elements, color palettes or media as you develop your own style, or even learning to paint by copying are perfectly OK and even encouraged! (as long as you’re truthful about your source when you share it online.) but copying or tracing someone else's work and passing it off as your own is not cool. for me, ideas come from a personal place and it's taken me years to develop my style, so it's pretty confusing and hurtful to see an alien version of my labor of love pop up on the internet without any reference back to me.
that's all! you're welcome to share a cat of your own creation in solidarity and tag it #CatsNotCopycats 🐾

these six new paintings are now up at @nahcotta gallery for the @enormoustinyart #eta22 show! (link in profile) i didn't have any particular vision for this series, but i like that they turned out to look like illustrations to some mysterious, nonexistent stories. my frames were custom made by the ever-wonderful @builtfromwood in salt lake city, utah πŸ–€

cover art detail from the new issue of @inthemomentmag, out today! 🌡
