"The lessons I learned in my first year at Yale SOM were invaluable to my effectiveness over this past summer. The core Operations class taught me hard skills such as how to calculate capacities to identify bottlenecks, while the Employee course offered soft skills that showed me how to motivate workers to improve morale."—J.P. Post-SOM Position: Associate Strategy Manager, PepsiCo

"Yale is a very good place to explore. The students are diverse, and so many different companies, and industries, recruit on campus. When I first came to Yale SOM, I wanted to go into general management or strategy. After meeting with different companies during corporate presentations, I narrowed my choices down to financial services, consumer products, and healthcare. They’re all quite different, but I recruited in all three industries, and I was able to explore all three in depth." —Frederick Kim ’18

"Around this time last year, I shared that I was starting business school at Yale. Well, I liked it so much that I decided to tack on another degree. I will now be a joint MBA/Master of Environmental Management student at Yale School of Management and Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Many of you know that I am passionate about sustainable consumption in general and secondhand clothing in particular, largely due to my mom @mazzeobeth and her store, Merry Go Rounds (@wearemerry, check it out). I’m now planning to make a career out of it, and am excited that these two degrees will help me get there. (And yes, I bought this shirt secondhand.) Thanks @cyndifaychen for the photo shoot!" —Melissa Mazzeo ’20 (Repost: @melissamazzeo)

Yale SOM has named an endowed chair in economics for Sharon Oster, the school’s former dean and the Frederic D. Wolfe Professor Emerita of Management and Entrepreneurship. Oster retired this spring after teaching at Yale for more than four decades, including 36 years at SOM. .
“This permanent recognition ensures that Sharon’s accomplishments—as a legendary teacher and colleague, and as the first woman to serve as our dean—will never be forgotten. For generations of future students and scholars, the Sharon Oster Professorship will be—as Sharon herself has been for us—an inspiration.” — Richard C. Levin, former @Yale president and a colleague of Oster’s in the Yale economics department

The origins of Yale Law School trace to the earliest days of the 19th century when law was learned by clerking as an apprentice in a lawyer’s office. The first law schools, including the one that became Yale, developed out of this apprenticeship system and grew up inside law offices.
.
The future Yale Law School formed in the office of a New Haven, Connecticut, practitioner, Seth Staples. Staples owned an exceptional library (an attraction for students at a time when law books were scarce), and he began training apprentices in the early 1800s.
.
By the 1810s, his law office had a full-fledged law school. Samuel Hitchcock, one of Staples’ former students, became a partner at the office and later, the proprietor of the New Haven Law School.
.
The New Haven Law School affiliated gradually with Yale from the mid-1820s to the mid-1840s. Law students began receiving Yale degrees in 1843. David Daggett, a former U.S. senator from Connecticut, joined Hitchcock as co-proprietor of the school in 1824. In 1826, Yale named Daggett to be professor of law in Yale College, where he lectured to undergraduates on public law and government.

Internship: Johnson & Johnson Consumer
.
“This summer I’m interning at Johnson & Johnson Consumer as a marketing summer associate. Home to some of the world’s most iconic consumer brands, like Band-Aid, Tylenol, and Neutrogena, J&J is a great place to learn first-hand from experts in CPG brand management. I was also drawn to J&J for its fantastic people-focused culture and dedication to its mission to provide products that better peoples’ lives.
.
As a summer associate on the Aveeno Face team, I’ve been tasked with developing a new strategy for one of the brand’s skin care lines. The project centers on a true business problem that the company is facing and allows me the opportunity to add value with my work. Every day is different, as I meet with various stakeholders to learn about the business, dive into databases to conduct research, or examine sales data in Nielsen. I have learned quickly how cross-functional brand management really is, working with colleagues in sales, consumer insights, supply chain, and finance, across campuses and brands.” —Ethan Prizant ‘19
