Happy #WorldTurtleDay! #DYK every one of Canada's 10 freshwater turtle species are now at risk in some part of the country? Vehicle collisions and habitat loss are major threats to turtles in Canada. Since our freshwater ecosystems are under stress, we're working to restore habitats, collect data using eDNA tech, and encouraging industries to use less salt during snowy months. 🐢⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the rarest seals in the world. 380 of them can only be found in Lake Saimaa, Finland. @wwfsuomi is working to save this species from extinction, which includes setting up camera traps so they can observe them in their habitat. #EndangeredSpeciesDay

The elusive snow leopard was caught on camera by our friends at @wwfmongolia, and isn't it breathtaking? The Gobi Altai province, where this footage was shot, has one of the highest snow leopard populations in all of Mongolia. The last snow leopard survey in the country was conducted in 2000 and found between 500 and 1000 individual cats. In an effort to save this species from being killed in retaliation, WWF Mongolia works to minimize human-leopard conflict. And thanks to great monitoring efforts, we are treated to beautiful moments like these.

Today we unveiled our Eastern Arctic Mariner's Guide. This guide (swipe!), which you can't read here (sorry!), will hang in poster form in participating ships that move through the Canadian Arctic. We developed this guide to help mariners avoid sensitive wildlife areas and marine species. While the willingness to plan wildlife-friendly routes and limit impacts on communities may be there, the ability to do so in the eastern Arctic was limited before now. We're grateful to Northern community members and others who helped refine this guide so that it could be easily used and embraced by the shipping industry, which has increased its presence in the Arctic as summer sea ice is on the steady decline.

Happy Mother's Day! 💐
Like all moms, rhinos are very protective of their young. They remain critically endangered in Africa today, and mothers are especially vulnerable to poachers. When mothers are killed for their horns and other parts that are valuable in Asian markets, their orphaned young are at great risk of dying from dehydration. Here's to all the moms who do everything they can to keep their young safe. 🦏💕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This first picture may not look like much but it's a transformation that will bring capelin back to Ship Cove, Newfoundland. In October 2017, this beach was so overrun with large rocks and boulders that capelin could no longer roll (swipe to the second photo to see the 'before' image). Thanks to funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, we were able to get to work on restoration efforts. In Newfoundland, #capelinroll is a major event, but when they don't roll, it doesn't just put a damper on the party, it hurts the whole ocean ecosystem. These small but hugely important fish are a vital food source for larger fish such as Atlantic cod, humpback whales and sea birds. We hope to see capelin roll once again in July! Stay tuned for more updates. 🐟🐋

A 30 day old Iberian lynx is just as precious as you'd expect! WWF has been working on the reintroduction of the lynx, which was considered the most endangered cat in the world in 2002 when there were less than 100 in the wild. Since 2005, 500 cubs have been born at the Breeding center of Zarza de Granadilla in Cáceres, Spain. The target of the breeding program is to raise lynx that are fit to be released in areas where they will have the best chance of survival. 🐱

Plastic can be deadly to wildlife. Thanks to our very own Lead Species Specialist @peteewins, this robin flew free after being caught in stringy plastic. Be sure to break up plastics before recycling and securing your bins. Way to go, Pete! 👏
