WWF-Canada  Building a future in which people & nature thrive. 🇨🇦 Be a #Wildlifer

Good news everyone: Nepal is on track to become the first country to double its wild tiger population! 🐯

This ambitious goal for all tiger range countries was set in 2010! All countries have until 2022 to #doubletigers. 💪

Thanks to all of our Canadian donors who've supported our work in Nepal over the years! Our office funds tiger research in Nepal and supports the rangers in Chitwan National Park who guard these magnificent cats! We also have an amazing big cat expert in house who was the technical lead in the first population survey back in 2009!👮

The work isn't done yet! More intensified conservation work will follow. An increase in tigers means that we have to work to keep both tigers and the people who share their habitats safe. #TX2 📷 DNPWC/WWF-Nepal

Happy World Rhino Day! 🦏

#DYK that few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves due to poaching and habitat loss? 🚨

Southern white rhinos, like the pair pictured here, were once thought to be extinct. Thanks to protected areas and sanctuaries, they are now thriving! 🙌

WWF works on rhino conservation, which includes supporting programs that put rangers on the ground. Our office helps fund rangers in Nepal’s Chitwan National Park, where you can find the greater one-horned rhino roaming! 👏

Over the last three summers, our Arctic program has funded the participation of two Inuit students on the @studentsonice expedition to western Greenland and the Canadian High Arctic. ⚓️

This year’s expedition included a citizen science project researching ocean currents, a cross-cultural soccer game in front of massive icebergs in Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland, and a polar dip in the scenic Sam Ford Fiord, near Clyde River, Nunavut. 🗺

Participants saw humpback whales, seals, three polar bears, and numerous seabirds. Swipe to see one of the polar bears! 🐋

Students also visited the community of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, to learn about daily life near Tallurutiup Imanga, Canada’s newest – and largest! – national marine conservation area! •

This is how you jump into your work week 🐋🌊

This rare triple breach was captured last month off the coast of Nova Scotia. ✨

Humpback whales can be found in the region from May to mid-October. 📆

While this is a spectacular moment to witness, boats should keep their distance from whales so that everyone stays safe!

74. That is the new number. We are watching extinction in real time. J50, also known as Scarlet, has been missing from her pod for several days and is presumed dead. While we want to remain hopeful, we know the juvenile southern resident killer whale was in a state of decline. @noaafisheries & Fisheries and Oceans Canada had been working together to deliver medication and feed her salmon, but she had already lost a lot of body mass. In addition to the recent death of a newborn, 8 of these critically endangered whales have died in the last two years. So they're at 74, and unless the Canadian government steps in and gives them increased protections off the coast of B.C., we will likely have to deliver more updates like this. Please know that we are working with other environmental groups and doing everything we can to reverse their decline. 🆘

After the *snap* you can hear the sound of relief. 🦆☺️ As long as single-use plastic is produced and carelessly discarded, wildlife will continue to get entangled. This was a happy ending due to human intervention, but we are calling on all of YOU to be a #Wildlifer and reduce the threat. Join or lead a #ShorelineCleanup on #CoastalCleanupDay on Sept. 15! Visit shorelinecleanup.ca to learn more! ♻️

A diver captured this footage of a stingray swimming with plastic stuck to its eye. It’s one of hundreds of species that end up entangled in plastic bags, nets, and fishing gear. Once entangled, animals may not be able to swim, find food or surface to breathe, while others suffer chronic injuries. #CoastalCleanupDay is on Sept.15 and we hope you'll join the global fight to end plastic pollution! We have #shorelinecleanup events in Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa & Vancouver! Register at ShorelineCleanup.ca. #Wildlifer 🆘♻️

Dying southern resident killer whales will get their day in court. Through our lawyers at @ecojustice_ca, we have requested the Federal Court to review the government’s failure to recommend an emergency order to protect the whales under the Species at Risk Act. Only 75 remain, and we want the government to do more to save them from extinction. Head over to blog.wwf.ca to read more about how we are working with @davidsuzukifdn, @georgiastraitbc, @nrdc_org, and @raincoastconservation to save these struggling whales. ⚖️

Happy #NationalDogDay! Right now, there are very good dogs defending wildlife in Nepal's Chitwan National Park. This pawsome pair Murray (named after tennis star @andymurray) and Sears, help sniff out poachers who may be after the Bengal tigers, greater one-horned rhinos and other wildlife in this park. In fact, they even sniff out animal parts in outside villages and have the ability to catch poachers red-handed. Our office is proud to support Nepal's efforts to achieve zero poaching. Paws together for this program! 🐾
To see Murray & Sears in action, watch today's #IGTV video. 🐶

Happy Orangutan Day! #DYK a new species was announced last year? However, the Tapanuli orangutan (not pictured here) is already the most endangered of all the great apes. The biggest threat to orangutans is habitat loss and fragmentation. How can you help? Avoid products that don’t use sustainable palm oil, which is a common ingredient in packaged products such as ramen and cookies.
