Western States Endurance Run  The original 100-mile trail race. Squaw Valley to Auburn, CA on the last weekend of every June.

On June 24, 1978, 35-year-old Pat Smythe was among 68 runners entered in Western States. Pat was joined by friend Mary Healy. The two women had founded the women's Bay Area running organization "Women on the Run." Among other things they wanted to raise awareness that women could succeed at long distances.

Pat succeeded and made history. She was one of only 28 official finishers. She became the first women's champion in Western States history.
