From the hundreds of submissions received for this year's World Class Competition, only 12 from each of the five USBG regions will move on for regional finals. Every single recipe submitted was re-created, tasted, and judged blind over the course of 2 days this week at Diageo New York. World Class recipe judges from accross the US joined, including alumni winners Chris Cardone, Charles Joly, and Tyson Buhler along with USBG Pittsburgh President Nicole Battle, Bartrepreneur Derek Brown, Speedrack co-Founder Lynnette Marrero, and Bar owner Anu Elford. "KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid)- I had developed a bit of a reputation over the years at World Class for putting on huge, elaborate presentations during some of my rounds, almost being more of a "performer" rather than a bartender. The “ritual theater” round is a challenge that really allows the competitor the creative freedom to really take the challenge in any direction he/she wants. This year, my final round was about Mexico and something that inspires you. A good friend convinced me to go the complete opposite route of my usual train of thought. I simplified my round as much as I could. I spoke from the heart, made a couple great cocktails, told my story and spent less than $30 dollars total on supplies for the round. "Cocktails against the clock (aka The Speed Round) - Winning back-to-back Speed Round Challenges at the 2016 and 2017 World Class Nationals was amazing because it was the outcome of a lot of pieces all coming together and a ton of hard work. It was a combination of organization (stock lists, bar maps, and drink-making efficiency), a variety of perfectly executed cocktails with a cleverly thought-out presentation and overall theme. This is my favorite round of the competition ever year because it’s when you truly test so many aspects of the craft. There are very few cocktail competitions that challenge you to be a great all-around bartender like World Class. It's not just making one really good drink and crossing your fingers.
