Momma and Me ❀️

So my last post about SUREFIRE is my favorite frame from the project. Believe it or not... there's actually a pretty cool life lesson that comes from this shot.
β€’
We typically try to set as many plans as possible for our lives.
β€’
We plan our career.
β€’
We plan to fall in love.
β€’
We plan to get married.
β€’
We plan to have children.
β€’
We plan so many things.
β€’
Filmmaking is no different. We plan and plan in the hopes that things will move as smoothly as possible as we attempt to realize our vision.
β€’
But sometimes... in the midst of all that planning... we also need to recognize when it's time to jump away from those expectations and harness the spontaneity of the present moment.
β€’
This frame is the final shot of the video. It would have never existed had I not kept myself open to new opportunities to capture Jamila and Roberto's love.
β€’
During the last few moments of our shoot... I saw @yasalbustami and @mrjohnnyortiz standing with the sunset behind them... took a photo of of them with my phone (see post from May 1st)... and immediately called the camera crew over to recreate and elevate the shot with the @arri Alexa Mini.
β€’
A few minutes later we had a completely new ending for our story.
β€’
So... keep going with your plans everyone... push as hard as you can to manifest those dreams... but keep your eyes open and your ears tuned for the moments that come along which may challenge your perception and expand your vision.
β€’
Often times... they are the moments that count the most.
β€’
Shoutout to @millchannel for the wonderful color correction work and big thanks to @anthonychrstian for being willing to crawl in the sand at the last minute to grab this shot.
β€’
Can't wait until the next chapter πŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€πŸš€

My favorite set photo ever. Not only is it the dopest crew photo that I've ever taken... it symbolizes everything that filmmaking is about. A group of people coming together to create something that is bigger than themselves in the hope that it will inspire others. There's so many people that were a part of SUREFIRE that I won't ever get to thank enough. Definitely want to send a special shoutout to @mike___jackson and @stiklori who have believed in me ever since our collaboration on MONSTER and have always supported each step in my journey as a storyteller. They're the only reason that Jamila and Roberto ever had a chance to tell their story and I think we all need to thank them for that gift. Get Lifted fam for life πŸ’―

This post is for upcoming filmmakers that wonder how the visuals come together for a shoot.
Stand on shoulders of artists who have done great work. Build references that will guide your vision. Whether it's a look book or whatever else you want to use. The best artists are pretty open about their influences and how they want to turn them into something wholly new.
β€’
Here are some references for SUREFIRE:
β€’
Slide 1: LA JAULA DE ORO. Shoutout to @josefkubotawladyka for putting me on to this one. SIN NOMBRE on steroids.
β€’
Slide 2: A SEPARATION is an incredible film. Won an Oscar in 2012. Asghar Farhadi is a genius.
β€’
Slide 3: AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS. Shot by Bradford Young. The God Eye prophet. This frame always made me think of the moment where Roberto is arrested by ICE and Jamila has to watch him being pulled away.
β€’
Slide 4: BLUE VALENTINE. It's sad AF but so damn good. The incredible thing about the film is that when the characters are really happy and really in love... you feel it 110%. When they're in pain and struggling... you feel it 111%. If you look at our night scenes where Jamila and Roberto explore the city it's clear where our inspiration comes from.
β€’
Slide 5: The infamous storefront scene in BV. We added a little extra flavor with some breakdancing 😝
β€’
Slide 6: Random shot of a convenience store. Don't remember where it came from. Proof that even that banality of a 7-11 can be visually spectacular.
β€’
Slide 7: ROMEO AND JULIET. Glad that we found a way to keep Jamila and Roberto from killing themselves at the end 😡
β€’
Slide 8: THE SALESMAN. Another Asghar Farhadi gem. Obviously a theme of portraying hijabis. SUREFIRE was totally new territory for me in that regard so we wanted to make sure that we got it right.
β€’
Slide 9: VALLEY OF SHADOWS AND DREAMS had a profound influence on our original concept. An astounding photo collection that focuses on the life of immigrants and migrant farmers in the Central Valley of California.
β€’
Slide 10: REFUGE. A documentary directed by @matthewkfirpo and produced by @magnacarta.tv. Watch it. Extremely relevant for our times.

Here's the last batch of BTS photos for #SUREFIRE. β€’
πŸ“·: @kboom + iPhone 6
β€’
Slide 1: There are several distinct moments of prayer in SUREFIRE. This is the first one that appears in the video. I realized that I had never seen Christians and Muslims praying together on screen in the same shot before. Watching someone perform Salah is truly beautiful. I only wish that we had an opportunity to show the entire ritual during the vid.
β€’
Slide 2: Jamila and Roberto in a water gun fight at a car wash. Another moment that I had never seen on screen. All of our night exteriors around the city where shot with available light. The Alexa Mini captured everything beautifully. Thanks @arri for building such an amazing camera.
β€’
Slide 3: The car wash scene was another one of my favorite moments from the vid. Watching it live was even better.
β€’
Slide 4: These ladies definitely haven't gotten enough credit for their important work in SUREFIRE. If you remember the scene where Jamila has her hijab snatched off... @emirafoods and @murielvillera were the ladies that created that friction. It's an important moment in the story because it is the first major obstacle that Jamila and Roberto encounter in their journey. Here it seems like they're waiting for me to give them some direction for the scene... but I'm too busy thinking about ordering pancakes and tacos πŸ˜‹
β€’
Slide 5: EMIRA shutting Lucy's down.
β€’
Slide 6: Jamila and Roberto share a contemplative moment on the Metro Rail. Gonna do another post soon about the various projects that influenced SUREFIRE. This scene was inspired by the classic film THE GRADUATE.
β€’
Slide 7: A quick break from the set with @yasalbustami.
β€’
Slide 8: This is the only photo I've got of our other two rockstar producers @blakepickens and @doctalove12. They were so clutch in so many ways.
β€’
Slide 9: The moment when you picture lock your video and you know you've got something dope. With our editor extraordinaire Fernando Viquez.
β€’
Slide 10: Gotta make sure you have fun on set. And no shoot is complete without turning up to some @future.

Slide 1: Jamila searches for Roberto. Casting pro tip for all the young filmmakers out there: Hire the actress that makes you cry in during her audition πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ β€’
Slide 2: Jamila sippin' a Mexican #coke. #NoPepsiAllowed
β€’
Slide 3: The immigrant living quarters. (forgot to tag @blakmist and @mikiemike!!!)
β€’
Slide 4: Our production design team did an incredible job to dress this space. Converted a residential garage into a totally different environment. The authenticity was unbelievable.
β€’
Slide 5: The best performers have an entire universe behind their eyes. If it's not in the eyes... it doesn't exist.
β€’
Slide 6: Rockstar squad. Actress. Producer. Key PA. All MVPs. Special shout out to @mrdomdeleon for being our anchor for the entire shoot.
β€’
Slide 7: These guys just came for the donuts.
β€’
Slide 8: Roberto getting in the zone for the scene. Had to make sure the authenticity was πŸ’―
β€’
Slide 9: This is reality for so many undocumented immigrants in America. Sobering AF.

Slide 10: Real handcuffs. Real emotions. Real pain.

β€’
Slide 1: Ultimate filmmaker goal: Make every frame like a painting.
β€’
Slide 2: Jamila is at the US-Mexico border wall between Calexico and Mexicali. Yes. There's a huge steel wall that already exists across much of the border. Over 700+ miles to be exact.
β€’
Slide 3: There were so many shots that we had to cut out of the border scene. 4.5 minutes is just not enough time to flesh everything out like you really want to. Such powerful imagery.
β€’
Slide 4: Jamila and Roberto looking at the wall that divides us
β€’
Slide 5: Sorry Kanye... imma let you finish... but we had the greatest cast of all time *shrug*
β€’
Slide 6: The incomparable @annakhaja as Luha.
β€’
Slide 7: Telling the cast this hilarious story about how I convinced John Legend to shoot a music video where we troll Donald Trump for 4 and a half minutes :-p
β€’
Slide 8: Shooting in the home of the big homie @lincolnlawyerla. Another stellar @_hamptonu graduate. #HamptonPride #HBCU
β€’
Slide 9: Jamila in Mexico (i.e. - El Mercado De Los Angeles)
β€’
Slide 10: @yasalbustami is one of those rare performers that you could watch doing almost anything. Her #authenticity is so genuine that she hardly ever registers a false moment on screen. #slay

Finally getting the chance to show the #SUREFIRE crew some love w/ some behind the scenes photos. MAJOR props to everyone who came together to make the project come to life. The producer's unit, camera, G&E, art dept, and on down the list. It's hard to choose just a few photos so I'm gonna make this a series of slideshows over the next few days.
πŸ“·: @kboom β€’
β€’
Slide 1: The first shout out goes to the camera dept. Was an absolute blessing to work with brother @isiahdontelee. Dude has what we call the "God Eye" when it comes to framing. Whatever I saw... whatever vision I had... he always found a way to elevate the shot even though we had to run and gun the entire shoot. Literally 1-3 takes for the majority of setups.
β€’
Slide 2: Our costume designer, Ciara Whaley, w/ @fahimfazli giving all the ANTM magic to the camera lol.
β€’
Slide 3: One of my fav locations. The moment that @yasalbustami walked through the trail of yellow wildflowers. So beautiful.
β€’
Slide 4: #Directing or whatever I call myself doing lol.
β€’
Slide 5: @carmendianne the HMU goddess giving Jamila that extra glow.
β€’
Slide 6: This is the only photo I could find of our AD @matlockfilms (right). He came on board at the last minute and did the damn thing. He's standing with @anthonychrstian (left) who did some additional photography and shot the lights out. As in most of the photos from the shoot... I've got my face buried in the monitor. Special shout out to Baby Movie Jesus for giving us all the gift of wireless monitors. I've always hated all the damn cables that come with traditional video taps. Thank you, Baby Movie Jesus.
β€’
Slide 7: Mother and son in front of their rural Mexican home.
β€’
Slide 8: Our amazing production designer Aiyana Trotter (left) watches the scene.
β€’
Slide 9: Le sigh. There was so much incredible footage that we had to leave on the cutting room floor. Got a few seconds of this shot into the vid... but it deserved more time. So sad because it's such a wonderful moment between Jamila and Roberto.
β€’
Slide 10: Luha and Naadim at the last location of our first day. It's not fair that either of them are so good looking lol.

Our cast and crew from #SUREFIRE after screening our video for almost 6,000 people at the @greek_theatre during @johnlegend's latest stop on the #DarknessAndLightTour. Missing a bunch of folks but happy that at least some of the family could celebrate our wonderful collaboration 🍻
