WISHtagram  🔌 Women Involved in Software and Hardware 💻

Some of our WISH members visited the @twilio and @google offices in the Bay Area last week! They got to check out the companies' cool office spaces, interact with their engineering teams (including lots of Cal Poly alumni!), and try their yummy food and drinks. A huge thank you to those companies, our Corporate Team, and the Cal Poly Computer Science department for making this happen! 🤗

Danica Liang is a 5th year Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies major (concentrating in Computer Science and Ethnic Studies) and she just happens to be our very own 2018-2019 WISH President🎉 This summer she worked at Salesforce in San Francisco as a Software Engineer on the Site Reliability Innovation team. Here is what Danica has to say about her experience! “This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to intern as a Software Engineering Intern at Salesforce in San Francisco, California! Some highlights of my internship include working on an impactful project for the Site Reliability Team, scheduling a meeting with Tony Prophet (the Chief Equality Officer of Salesforce!), going to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the Exploratorium for intern events, and trying out all of the yummy food that the city has to offer. What I love most about Salesforce is its Ohana Culture. Everyone is incredibly supportive and encouraging -- and we know how to have fun together too! We also recognize the social impact of the company as a whole and we strive towards promoting equality and giving back the community.” Thanks Danica for sharing and we are so excited to have you as president! #futureforce #salesforceohana #womenintech @salesforce

Charvi Bhargava is a fourth year Computer Science major and STS - Media, Art, Technology minor who worked in Beaverton, Oregon this summer on Nike’s Delivery Enablement team in Nike Digital (consumer facing). Here is what Charvi had to say about her experience. “I had an unforgettable internship this summer where my main project was developing a branded site to frame a dashboard that enables top-down management within Nike Digital. I loved being immersed in Nike's collaborative workplace culture, learning , meeting amazing people, and of course, going to work at the most beautiful campus ever. I also enjoyed Portland's food scene, hiking on weekends, and working with so many other Cal Poly interns (10 of us!). It's really awesome to be a part of a company that so many can connect to, worldwide.” Congratulations, Charvi and thanks for sharing your experience😁💻 #swooshlife #nikeintern #womenintech #WISHCalPoly #WISHSummerSpotlight @nike

Melinda is a fifth year Computer Science major and Mathematics minor. This summer she worked as a Software Engineering intern on Cisco's OneIdentity team! Here's what she thought of her experience: "This summer I had the opportunity to work with several other interns on a Browser and Device Fingerprinting application that aims to prevent fraudulent registrations on an identity and access management service within Security. I also contributed to front-end production code and saw it go live, which is always an amazing feeling! Advice I would give to other women in computing: Never be afraid to ask questions and express what you’re interested in; many are happy to help and are rooting for your success! 😊" #WISHCalPoly #WISHSummerSpotlight #WeAreCisco #LoveWhereYouWork #WomenInTech #PolyEngineering

Karen (@karenkauffman3) is a fourth year Computer Science major and Statistics minor who worked on Adobe's Cloud Technology team this year. She says, "I've spent all 3 summers during my undergraduate degree as a Web Engineering Intern at Adobe, and have accepted a full time offer as a front end developer! Adobe has a phenomenal culture that encourages employees to be involved in movements we are passionate about outside of work. I've appreciated all the support my manager and team have given me to grow as both an engineer and social influencer." Congrats on the new job, Karen! 🎉

Everyone remember Cara (@cara.pow)? She was our WISH President for 2016-2017! She graduated with a degree in Computer Science in Spring 2017, and she's now employed as a Software Engineer at Google's San Francisco offices. Cara says, "I am working on the Queries and APIs team in Datastore/Firestore, Google's NoSQL database. I work with incredibly smart and incredibly fun people, which is the best part of the job! I've learned the importance of finding a balance between working on things that are interesting to you, and working with people you like. Also, work life balance is key!" 🔑

Rutu (@rutusamai) is a 3rd year Computer Science major, and she spent her summer as a Software Engineering + Program Management Intern with Microsoft! Here's what she said about her time there:
"I had an unforgettable, amazing summer interning as a Microsoftie up in Seattle. I worked on Azure Container Registry integration for the Docker Extension on Visual Studio Code, an open-source extension with 4.4 million users! My favorite parts of the internship included the Signature Event (a giant intern party/concert at Gasworks Park), being interviewed as part of Azure Fridays on Channel 9 Studios, eating at themed food festivals, and meeting inspiring, talented, awesome new friends and mentors. I'm looking forward to spreading and continue practicing Microsoft's mission, 'Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.'" 🌎 #microsoftlife #microsoftintern #womenintech #wocintech #wishcalpoly #wishsummerspotlight

Meet Louise (@lowizzle), a 5th year Software Engineering major and our Diversity Director for this year! Here's what she had to say about her summer experience: "I'm currently interning at Allstate's CompoZed Labs in Charlotte, NC! I'm working on micro services that interact with service gateway endpoints, as well as rewriting a web app from Angular to React. One of my favorite things about this internship is having the chance to explore out of California. There are multiple internship opportunities out of state for you to get out of your comfort zone and explore the world. If you want to learn more about my experience, feel free to DM me 😊" #wishcalpoly #wishsummerspotlight #allstateemp #wocintech #womenintech

We are excited to begin featuring our many WISH members who have exciting stories to share from their summer internships🎉 For our first feature in the series we have a duo feature, Katie Buck and Sarah Kurdoghlian. Katie Buck is a third year studying Software Engineering. This summer she was a part of the NBCUniversal Media Tech internship program working from NYC🏙She focused on iOS Development and Video playback with her technology team. Here is what Katie had to say about what she learned and a word of advice to all our WISH ladies! “I worked on a video playback SDK that is sent to our brands to play videos. I added features into the iOS and tvOS test harnesses and refactored code to make it more efficient. My advice is to be confident in your abilities, because I was able to pick up two new programming languages within my first week there but was worried I would not be able to do it.” Sarah Kurdoghlian is a third year majoring in Computer Science. She just happened to be a coworker of Katie’s this summer, but she worked from the Universal City location in Los Angeles☀️🌊 Sarah was an intern for the Media Engineering department, here is what she said about her experience. “I was able to build a web application for my team to help centralize where they report their service/network outages. Throughout the process I taught myself the Django web framework and how to configure a server for production! The culture at NBC was so positive and supportive, everyone welcomed me with open arms! My advice is to always be curious and not be afraid to ask questions. Being an intern means you don’t know everything, so it’s your chance to get all your questions answered!” Thank you Katie and Sarah for sharing you summer stories😁 We at WISH are so proud of your accomplishments, see you in the Fall! Please reach out to these two wonderful ladies with any questions or just to connect💻🙌🏻 #InternatNBCU #mediatech #codingbuddies #WISH #womenintech #wishcalpoly #wishsummerspotlight

WISH takes over the CS banquet! And congrats to our advisor Julie Workman who won the Professor of the Year award!

WISH members having fun bonding at the Avila Farmer’s Market! 🍓🏝

This past weekend, WISH hosted Expanding Engineering! This event is a day-long event where we bring high school students to Cal Poly and engage them in computer science by introducing them to interactive aspects of the field. We had 5 sessions, including Virtual Reality and Raspberry Pi.
Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped with all the different sessions, set up, and clean up!! 💻🔋
