With @wingshotdesign, I’ve built brands and websites, experiences and stories for other small businesses whose clients are somehow connected to the outdoors, land, wildlife and conservation and I still continue this operation.
-
But with @wingshotcollection, I hope to offer more conversation and awareness through new products that reach more than just my business clients. While I love designing for other businesses, there’s also something to be said for bringing my own ideas to the table in a way that makes sense for my business.
-
While the items shown here aren’t 100% indicative of the end products that @WingshotCollection will feature—primarily because these are personal items produced from wild birds I’ve hunted myself (and whose meat was or is in our freezer) and to sell these would be illegal. But they are some of my favorite things I’ve made, because, when wearing these items to this annual gala, the entire point is to start conversation—often with other females—who inquire about the feathers, the pheasants or even the hunt.
-
It’s a great way of encouraging the non-hunters to get out there and to engage in an easy and open conversation about conservation and hunting. It’s equally enjoyable to have the shared appreciation with the other hunters present, male and female alike, who instantly recognize my work as a handmade product that stemmed first from conservation.
-
The idea behind these items is what the Collection will be based upon. Finding ways to #preserveyourhunt. Offering specialty products, papers, fabrics that can be used in your lives, homes and exchanges that continue your appreciation, communication and open conversation about what it is that makes the hunt, outdoors, bird dogs, wildlife, and experience—just so special for you.
-
Details for my first product, a specialty book for #waterfowl hunters, can be found at the link in the bio. Be sure to check it out. You’re going to want this for yourself or the hunter that’s come after you before next duck season begins.

What is now a rarity in these parts, I was born here in Charleston, SC. Both sides of my family have resided in SC since the early 1700s.
-
We now live just north of Charleston in Berkeley county. Named for two of the original eight Lord’s Proprietors, Sir William and John Berkeley, it was established in 1682. Berkeley County, often overlooked for the visual significance of neighboring Charleston’s architecture and tourism industry, is equally as historically significant with fantastic wildlife our outdoor recreational opportunities.
-
The Swamp Fox, General Francis Marion, many saw portrayed in The Patriot, was born and buried here after leading an integral role in the southern campaign that directly contributed to the success and founding of America.
-
Berkeley County sits inland on the same Cooper River that travels to the Ashley River to form the Atlantic Ocean off of Charleston. The inland Cooper still boasts numerous rice fields and cypress rice gates, dug and developed with slave labor, that wind around the river channel. These are the public waters where I first learned to duck hunt.
-
The second largest county in the state, Berkeley also includes Lake Moultrie, named for General William Moultrie. The lake and many rivers combine to offer almost 200 miles of navigable waterways—more than any other county in the state.

Some of you know me from my work at @WingshotDesign. Others are just connecting through my newest venture here with the @WingshotCollection. So I thought I’d take some time to participate in the #marchmeetthemaker challenge. I won’t be posting all 30 days but wanted to select a few that may be of interest as it relates here.
-
I’ve pulled some photos from my personal IG, @sarahnell_sc. The reason both of my businesses serve the hunting & outdoors industries is simply because the experiences, conversations, wildlife, like-minded people (and the dogs!) are all what I enjoy. And when it comes to my work, anytime I can create something that sparks that same interest—especially for someone who did NOT grow up in the outdoors or with an understanding of its impact—I count it as a win.
-
Speaking of dogs, my husband and I have two, a retired Black Lab and a #BoykinSpaniel. And they’re usually close at hand.
-
I grew up with hunting and fishing. The latter I enjoy, I’m just terrible at it, unless you count crabbing & gigging! I’d spent time wingshooting and deer hunting but never ducks. My husband took me on my first duck hunt years ago & I’ve never looked back.
-
We volunteer with @ducksunlimitedinc on our local chapter and state committee. I also enjoy helping the local @quail_forever chapter when I can, especially with hands on work in the Francis Marion National Forest. We also enjoy supporting the @boykinspanielsociety, the @carolinaboykin_cbsrc and we have a tiny #teardroptrailer that we tow all over to camp in with the dogs as we go.
-
One thing a lot of of people don’t know about me is I love to swim. I didn’t grow up with a swim club but always enjoyed teaching swimming and lap swimming—even as a kid. I would volunteer to help teach swim classes before I was old enough to even be paid and would swim a mile during the lifeguard’s lunch break before summer public swimming opened in the afternoon. Another time...
-
I found open water distance swimming in 2015 & was able to swam the #CharlestonHarbor & #LakeJocassee, each 2.4 Miles. I wasn’t able to participate the next two years but am training now to swim again and can’t wait.
