Sophie and I played alone in the park yesterday for a long hour running when she stopped curious in her tracks and asked me where her friends were. The last couple of times we played there someone had dropped off a whole passel of them at just the right moment. I said Sophie I don’t know and she twirled around the monkey bars once and called out in a singsong voice, Friends, where are you? She took a tiny breath, an SUV pulled into the parking lot, and a man and a woman unloaded two tangle-headed girls, one of them Sophie’s age. Sophie held out her arms expectantly and began walking towards her. The other girl threw her arms open wide and ran and they hugged there in the middle of the park under the sun with all of us smiling. Sophie named her Cousin. And if you’re in the park and you remember who you are, your order’s always up.
