"We are the change."
"I've scrolled through memes about moving to Canada; that Orange is the New Black; that everything half of this country has fought for will be reversed; and that #California will finally secede from the Union. Friends especially women, those of color and certain faiths—have painted a sobering, vivid reality that I hope never comes to them. So many feel like more than an election was lost—their existential identity has been challenged to its core.
But fantasizing over alternative endings in what feels like a dream doesn't alter reality. More than—each toxic thought you relish in only digs a deeper mental grave that counters our ability to #BUILD. If I learned anything from the cancer that took my father’s life 15 years ago, that kind of toxicity can literally kill you. Make no mistake: I’m not discounting the very real pain that this outcome has created for so many; indeed, we're each born with, given, and interpret different realities; and I won't begin to pretend like I understand Universal Struggle--no one does.
But instead of digging yourself into a hole and chastising half of the country that you didn’t realize “still existed” or shouldn’t exist simply because they don’t fit your perception of 2016, we need to #WORK. We need to WORK like we’ve never worked together to make some people’s dream and another’s nightmare WORK. We must guide and empower those across the aisle, across the freeway in counties we’ve never encountered to #collectively become the people that have grown this nation’s promise for more than 240 years. We make things better by first being better ourselves.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little scared. I’m visibly not white and will be thinking even more carefully about getting into certain cars with certain drivers, or heading to certain parts of town--and I'm smart enough to know that my struggle is a fraction of the reality some of my friends experience every day. But I also know that we can disown this reality, avoid it until it doesn’t disappear, or can embrace it as our own. Because whether you like it or not, it's now yours.” - #bingchen
