“At the Masque” just completed oil on canvas 30x40" • This began as my sunset painting from Halloween 2016 ... then I decided it was very far from finished.

Sunset Retrospective – 2009 continued. Preparing for INTO THE SUNSET, my book based on 11 years of consecutive daily sunset paintings. This sequence includes a painting from inside Scott Stadium at UVa, during a U2 concert (although I think Muse was playing at the time). #art#painting#oilpainting#sunset#book#outsiderart#contemporaryart#virginia#uva#u2#muse#skyscape#williamvandoren

2009 Retrospective – Part 1 – This has been a sunset painting retrospective (selections from having painted every sunset 2006–2016), but 2009 starts out with the sunrise over Washington D.C. for Barack Obama’s first inauguration, followed by my 36x48 sunset from that historic (and cold, and windy) day. There’s also a rare watercolor, a moonset (image no. 4), a sunset (image no. 6) from Symington, Scotland, and the last one is an early afternoon plein air painting from the summer solstice.

Sunsets of 2008 – Continuing a look back at 11 years of painting every sunset. All of these are from the same place, outside Charlottesville, Virginia. Oil on panel and oil on canvas.

Sunsets of 2007 – into the second year of what turned out to be 11 years of painting every sunset. Most are from where I live, outside of Charlottesville; the two cloudy ones near the end were done in August in the Berkshires between Great Barrington and Stockbridge. All oil paintings on canvas or panel, 14x18.

Sunsets of 2006 – although the first image here is the sunrise on New Year’s Day 2006. So, I’d stopped doing sunsets after painting every one in 1998 – a seven-year break! Even had a solo show in Charlottesville in 2000 (curated by @jenfariello) without a single sunset in it. But this was the start of eleven years of consecutive sunset paintings.

“Unwrapped” – digital illustration on iPhone for the Christmas card @wattspassage and I sent out (late, as usual!) this year. Yes, you really needed to see more red and green!

Sunsets of 1998. If you paint every sunset, as I did in ‘98, you naturally paint the view from wherever you happen to be at sunset, even if it means painting the next day from a sketch. This selection includes (#2) a view near the top of Rockfish Gap on I-64, (#5) the top of the refreshments tent during a rainy performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Barboursville ruins, (#1, #8 and #9) the view along the railroad tracks in Charlottesville (see previous post), and, finally, from December, looking down Route 29 in Charlottesville from just north of Greenbrier.

Sunsets of 1997 – including (last in sequence) sunset 20 years ago today, Christmas 1997. (That and #5 were my second sunset paintings from the day – I’d painted the sunset, the sky changed and I had to do a second!) All of these were oil on canvas. Number 3 in this sequence was the beginning of my first experiment with painting the sunset from every single day – started with autumnal equinox (22 September) all the way through 1998. Didn’t try that again til New Year’s Day 2006 – and then kept going 11 years.

Sunsets of 1996 – continuing my year-by-year review of the sunset series – some are small oil paintings on paper, others are larger on canvas or panel, and some were experiments with watercolor and other media. A great many larger pieces from this period have not yet been shot or scanned, since I wasn’t posting back then. Currently catching up on documentation for my book, Sunset Chronicles: Paintings and Notes from Four Thousand Nights.

Sunsets of 1995 – from the first year of my sunset series, including the very first one – mostly small oil paintings on heavy watercolor paper. Hoping that by the time we get to reviewing 2016–17, I’ll have new work to post!
