Congratulations to Kererū for winning #birdoftheyear. While the humble hihi didn’t win this year, we're proud to support kererū. In fact, kererū numbers have increased 300% since 2011 in our natural capital, thanks to @visit_zealandia as well as the all the tree planting and predator control happening across the city. Wellingtonians also recorded the most kereru again this year in the #GreatKereruCount with more than 5,500 counted in the Wellington Region.

The #WellyRainbow crossing is officially open!

Join us for the official opening of the #WellyRainbow crossing tomorrow (Wed 10 Oct). From 12 noon there'll be street party fun including a best-dressed competition, free food & much more with @theedgenz and the official ribbon cutting will be at 4pm. Come along to 'glide with pride' across Cuba Street!

One of the most remarkable women in NZ history, Suzanne Aubert was honoured in a ceremony at Pukeahu War Memorial today, on the 92nd anniversary of her funeral. Mother Aubert, as she was known, was a nun, social worker & herbalist who founded New Zealand’s only indigenous order, the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, more commonly known as Sisters of Compassion. As part of our recently introduced Heritage Plaques scheme, a plaque to Mother Aubert was unveiled outside the crèche in the Pukeahu War Memorial in Buckle St.

We'll be installing the #WellyRainbow crossing in the CBD this weekend to show our support for the #LGBTQI community. While we do the work, Dixon Street will be closed to general traffic between Taranaki Street & Victoria Street on Sat & Sun (6-7 Oct) and detours will be in place. Pedestrian access won’t be affected, residents will have vehicle access at controlled entry points and Dixon St will re-open at 5am on Monday 8 Oct.

We had lots of fun at Kids' Day Out on Saturday in @wellingtongardensnz. Did you come along too? Share your best photos in the comments below.

Check out this great photo of the Basin Reserve’s scoreboard in 1991. Who remembers Martin Crowe’s 299 score? Most of the Basin Reserve looks a little like a construction site, but the new Players’ Pavilion will be ready in time for the first test against Sri Lanka on 15 December. Search ‘news’ at Wellington.govt.nz for an update.

Our gardeners have planted a colourful display down by the Railway Station including the bolting purple Kale. ‘Bolting’ is when the ground goes above a certain temperature it flips a switch in the plant to produce flowers and seeds. Check it out next time you are walking by.

A shot of the beautiful South Coast at the weekend - it’s a bit less calm today! If you’re out and about in our beautiful city & take a snap, use #OurWellington so we can see them & give them a share.

Check out the gorgeous tulips at @wellingtongardensnz. Did you head along to the Tulip Sunday event last weekend? There’s still plenty of free activities & events to check out in our Spring Festival this week including Kids’ Day Out on Saturday. Search ‘Spring Festival’ at Wellington.govt.nz for more info.

Did anyone else spot @kuricompanion and some cute doggos enjoying the sun by the @worldofwearableart sign this afternoon? You really can't beat Welly on a good day.
