Wellcome Collection  The free museum and library that aims to challenge how we all think and feel about health by connecting science, medicine, life and art.

Memento mori artworks and objects, like this male figure, were often used to remind people of the shortness of human life and the uselessness of material luxuries. The memento mori (Latin: "remember (that) you will die") had a moralising purpose in Christianity were death served to emphasise the emptiness of earthly pleasures and represented instead an opportunity to focus on the afterlife.

Is it nice weather?! We literally don't know β˜€πŸƒπŸŒˆβ˜”πŸ”₯❄. Let's celebrate our turbulent British springtime by sitting outside drinking tea and eating cake, like these fine chaps. Unless it's raining, of course. Or hailing.

This painting of three young women in the garden is by Kate Greenaway. Aside from that, we don't know much about this image at all. What do you think about it?

Benjamin Bell, an influential Scottish surgeon (1749-1806), introduced a number of modifications to surgical instruments during his career. This amputation saw appeared in 1780. It was used for amputations that required cutting through the metacarpal bones, which are situated in the palm of the hand. 😱 The hexagonal handle was a general innovation introduced in 1770 in order to improve the grip on the saw.

Did you know that we have a collection of early books for the blind and visually impaired? Here is a book of raised print. It allows someone to read the book using touch. Unlike Braille, which is based on a configuration of dots to indicate letters, raised print uses embossing to push the letters above the surface of the page. This book was used in the Perkins School for the Blind, probably to teach blind or visually impaired students Latin.

The heading on the first page reads "Lives of illustrious Romans. Liver primus". The title page reads: "Viri Romae. Printed for the use of the blind at the perkins institution and massachusetts asylum. s.p. ruggles, printer. boston. 1839". (#wellcomelibrary EPB Blind 5 @greatervisionperkins

Hayfever much? This advert circa 1890 offers a novel solution for the many Victorians plagued with respiratory afflictions across Britain πŸ˜·πŸƒπŸ’ (#wellcomelibrary ref: EPH299/1, Box 25). The Carbolic Smoke Ball Company did a roaring trade in the age of unregulated medication and medical advice. However, it is better known in legal circles, as this company was one of the first to offer a guaranteed reward (Β£100! πŸ’°) to anybody who contracted influenza whilst using the device.
Letters from users making claims against the product's efficacy were obstinately ignored by the company, and the consequent legal cases fighting The Carbolic Smoke Ball Company for the promised compensation instigated the birth of the consumer rights and protection laws we have today. So maybe we should all stick to honey and hankies!

Margery Crandon was a spiritualist who claimed to channel her dead brother, Walter. Suspicions were raised when Walter began leaving fingerprints in wax during her seances.
.
As part of their investigations, the Society for Psychical Research took fingerprints of all those in attendance so that they could not be mistaken for Walter’s. Margery was finally discredited when it was discovered that a thumbprint allegedly produced by Walter was identical to that of Margery’s dentist, Dr Frederick Caldwell. Caldwell later admitted to giving her a piece of dental wax impressed with his thumbprint after teaching her the casting method.

Found in our Ephemera Collection: two WWI charity flag pins supporting young wounded soldiers, circa 1914-15. These pins were handed out to people who made donations to charitable causes, such as those supporting 'wounded boys', refugees or prisoners of war. This was one of the many charitable acts that rallied, reassured, and repaid, throughout the two World Wars βœŒπŸ•Š. #wellcomelibrary reference: EPH4&5.
