Weeksville Heritage Center  Historic site of a 19th century African American community and multidimensional museum in Brooklyn. 158 Buffalo Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11213

We are exactly ONE week away from Giving Tuesday! Weeksville has been given the awesome opportunity to have our donations matched (up to $5,000) by @bklynfoundation as a part of #BrooklynGives. We invite you to show your love for Weeksville by joining our campaign and help us reach of our goal of $5,000 that will go towards our Weeksville Wednesday programs. Tell your friends and family members about the important work we do and ask them to join us in helping to make a difference. On November 28, you will have 24 hours to make your donation, and all giving will end at 11:59PM. We thank you in advance for your continued support!

Another great week in the books for us at Weeksville! Thank you to everyone that came to Day 5 of #WhatWillBeDifferent powered by Brian Tate! We are committed to engaging and educating our community about immigrant rights and citizenship!

Our next #WeeksvilleWednesdays is just around the corner! Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has approved partial implementation of the travel ban, and the evolving policy is the subject of fierce litigation and debate, what are the consequences for those Americans who are among its targets? What does it mean to be American when your ethnic identity has been co-branded with terrorism? More specifically, what will be different for Sudanese Americans? Weeksville is honored to be a part of this community conversation powered by @whatwillbedifferent! We ask that you join us for this special evening.

We're ready to kick the weekend off as @ubwdance's Chanon Judson-Johnson brings to us a HAIR PARTY: Superheroes - Write Your Own story, for November's #WeeksvilleWeekend! Be prepared for movement, art making, and conversation as we explore new paths on the roads to "Equity" and "Liberation!" Rounding out the day will be a quilting workshop led by Sylvia Hernandez and an embroidery class with Dennis Thomas. The Weeksville Fun Zone will be available all day for children and tours of the Historic Hunterfly Houses will run on the hour between 3pm - 5pm.

See you Saturday!

Out of the mouths of babes...

Ain't no party like an Urban Bush Women HAIR PARTY!

This is not the place for wallflowers. Get ready to dance, create visual art, and make your voice heard as we welcome UBW's Chanon Judson-Johnson for "Superheroes, Write Your Own Story!" this Saturday for #WeeksvilleWeekends.

The Weeksville team had an awesome time at the kickoff of Maria Thereza Alves' 'Seeds of Change' exhibition in collaboration with the @veralistcenter! We can't wait until it stops by Weeksville Heritage Center this Spring. Stay tuned!

Another great #WeeksvilleAmbassdors meet-up for the books! Thank you to @ginamonique_ and the @bamcinematek team for inviting us to pre-screen Dee Rees' incredible film #Mudbound. Run, not walk, to take in this beautiful visual intersecting family, race, and war when it opens for an exclusive two-week run beginning on November 17th at BAM.

Sunday is the perfect time for some leisure reading. From Sarah Baartman to The Tuskegee Experiment to J. Marion Sims' "patients", the black body has always suffered at the hand of the medical industry. Join THNK Book Club powered by @hightopsandheels as they gather to talk about Harriet A. Washington's "Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present".

The #WeeksvilleAmbassadors have joined forces with the #iSo14BelowFilmClub and @bamcinematek to celebrate Black cinema during our 2017-2018 season. Our kick-off event is a special pre-screening of Dee Rees' #Mudbound, starring @therealmaryjblige. Tickets are $15/$10 for our Ambassadors and can be purchased via the link in our bio.

Yesterday was a HUGE day for the Weeksville family and a win for the Crown Heights-BedStuy community. Buffalo Avenue, where Weeksville Heritage Center resides is now officially Dr. Joan Maynard Way, honoring the founding member of the Society For The Preservation of Weeksville and our first Executive Director! With Joan as our guiding light, we will continue to tell the story of one of the first free Black communities in the US and use that history to propel us forward towards a brighter future for Central Brooklyn. Thank you to @senator_hamilton, @rcornegyjr, Jacob Morris, and former City Councilmember Al Vann for joining us in this effort. As former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden said, "Brooklyn is a kingdom and the crown we wear is made up of people like Dr. Joan Maynard. Not famous people, but regular folks that simply love Brooklyn."
