Today I am releasing my latest album, "The Emotional Meaning Of Home." As part of Bandcamp Friday, all profits from the sales today will be donated to the ACLU to help those in need. Each song is also accompanied by a 16mm film, using footage shot by my great Uncle Elmer during the 50's and 60's. The record deals with the themes of rebirth from grief, long-suffering, and loss of innocence.
The New Honey Shade - The Emotional Meaning Of Home |
Home shapes us, defines us, nurtures us, gives us a sense of love and stability. As one grows old and departs from childhood, we see this soft and loving world vanish into the past. And yet, we are beckoned to begin again. A rebirth from the grief, long-suffering, and loss of innocence. Something begins to stir inside of us as guardians, finding safety in the memory of what was once good. *Dedicated to my Father and Brothers. After the passing of our Mother in early 2005, my family was struck with grief and sorrow. She gave us life, love, and an idyllic childhood. Each song features a 16mm family film, shot by my Mother's Uncle, Elmer Stoops, in the 1950's-60's.

I've had the exquisite pleasure of mixing the debut album by Old Fire (John Mark Lapham) entitled, "Songs From The Haunted South". Lindsey Neal Kuykendall and I also recorded piano on the end of the song, "Helix". It is a 10 year in the making body of work that features over 20 other musicians/artists helping to bring this music to life. Designed by Vaughn Oliver (Coctuea Twins, Pixies) and Ivan Katsarov. Vocal performances by Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine), DM Stith , Ian William Craig, Christopher Barnes(Gem Club), Rebekka Karijord, Sarah Lowes, Ieva Berberian, & Alex Mass. Guitar work by Robin Allender, Bob Hoffnar, Alex Hutchins, Warren Defever, & Scott Poley. Drummers featured include Thor Harris (Shearwater), & Joe Ryan. Organs by Christian Christian Madden. Sawblade by Danny Norbury. Cellos by Semay Wu. Flute by Caroline Weeks. Mastered for vinyl by Ian Hawgood. Please check out the release below and grab one while they last!

The pet project of Texas based programmer John Mark Lapham, - of ‘The Earlies’ and 4AD band ‘The Late Cord’ fame - Old Fire joins a world-class roster that includes the likes of Steven Wilson, The Pineapple Thief, Anathema, Nordic Giants and The Anchoress.

Taking nearly a decade to make, 'Songs from the Haunted South' has been a labour of love for Lapham.

Born from an album concept for a 4AD project with singer Micah P. Hinson (The Late Cord), the album was originally intended to feature different singers and musicians recording songs that were both covers and originals. After parting ways with Micah, Lapham remained determined to realize his vision for the album and sought voices he considered special or fitted the inspiration.
