The TRUTH about fruit! 🍉

At this time of year nature provides us with an abundance of fresh fruit at the peak of its season. Ripe mangoes, sweet melons, juicy peaches... the list goes on!
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
The reason we are so attracted to these fruits is because as human beings we are literally BUILT to eat them! Fruits provide fast acting energy, essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and hydration... all wrapped up in a delicious, portable and easy to digest package.

"But what about the sugar? Won't that make me fat?"
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Yes, fruits do contain sugar. But this sugar is very different to the kind of sugar found in marshmallows, cakes and pop tarts 🍰

Fruit contains a high content of fibre and water which slows the release of sugars into the bloodstream. This provides a much more sustained form of energy, rather than the 'spike and crash' you would get from eating table sugar.

In a controlled study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted in 2013, restricting the fruit intake of subjects with type 2 diabetes had no impact on their blood sugar, weight, or waist circumference. Restricting REFINED sugar improved ALL of these biomarkers 🤓

And if all that wasn't enough, fruit is widely consumed in all of the world's 'Blue Zones.' These are the communities with the healthiest and longest living populations on Earth 🌏

CONCLUSION: Fruit is one of the healthiest foods we can put in our bodies and should be enjoyed regularly as part of a balanced diet.

I’m no fashion expert, but I know that greens are ALWAYS in season 💁‍♀️🌱 Did you know that leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli and kale are some of the best sources of calcium on the planet? Most people automatically think of dairy products when looking for foods high in calcium, but here are a few facts about this mineral that may surprise you 👇

🌿 Calcium is a mineral found in soil, where it is absorbed into the roots of plants. Animals then get their calcium by consuming these plants. You can drink animal milk to get your calcium, or you can go straight to the source and eat calcium rich plants!
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
⚡️ Plants also contain an abundance of other vitamins and minerals (such as potassium, magnesium and K2) which have been shown to improve calcium utilisation in the body. Plants are alkaline, not acidic and therefore don’t cause urinary calcium loss as does a diet that contains dairy products.

💪 A high intake of fruits and vegetables has been shown to prevent against osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break. On the other hand, a high intake of dairy products has been shown to INCREASE your chances of developing this disease.

🥦 The calcium found in plants has been shown to be much more bioavailable in humans, with plant based calcium absorption rates averaging between 40 - 60% compared to just 31% for animal sources!
