Today is International Women's Day, commemorating the movement for women's rights. This year's theme is Be Bold For Change, celebrating social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women, and calling for gender parity. Many women here and worldwide are unable to participate because of social and financial constraints.
These photos taken in 2014 and 2015, show how some women in Africa are relied upon in their social tribes.
The first shows a woman of the SAN Bushmen of Kalahari Desert in South Africa digging for a 'water melon' to obtain water, the second is one of her tribeswomen. The last is a group of Maasai women in Southern Kenya. The Maasai lives revolve around their cattle, which are highly valued and a measure of wealth. Only the Maasai men own the cattle. The Maasai women do almost all of the work. They are responsible for building their huts and maintaining them, managing and milking the cattle, traveling great distances to collect water, and all domestic tasks. The cattle are not killed and are only used for milk, which is a mainstay of Maasai diet.
