Looking south towards the setting sun in early December. It gets dark here very quickly at this time of year, but that just makes the fleeting appearance of the sun all the more rewarding. #visitorkney #loveorkney

Late in the afternoon the December sun often catches St Magnus Cathedral, brightening up the old building's red sandstone. The surrounding graveyard is a fascinating place for a wander too - so much history and character in this corner of Kirkwall. #visitorkney #loveorkney

Sometimes you just have to explore to find something unexpected. This waterfall cascades into the sea at Windwick, hidden from the traditional viewpoint. @jamwrights managed to find it during his recent trip to the islands. #visitorkney #loveorkney

The day after the storm before. The seas to the west of Orkney have been crashing into shore and over the cliffs today after Storm Caroline made her mark on the islands. This house would have had a front row seat to the action. But the sheep? They've seen it all before, it seems πŸ‘ 😁 #visitorkney #loveorkney

Orkney well and truly welcomed #stormcaroline today with storm force winds, rain and grey, gloomy skies. We felt the need to cast our minds back to slightly calmer weather and a walk at Waulkmill Bay last month. Going by the forecast it sounds like we might have to keep imagining scenes like this for a few days yet...β˜ƒ #visitorkney #loveorkney

There are worse places to be than the Orkney coastline at this time of year. Although, going by the forecast, we might not be saying that later this week...β˜ƒπŸŒŠβ„ #visitorkney #loveorkney

St Peter's Kirk has overlooked the bay of Skaill in Orkney for 180 years now, through all the storms and sunsets that hit the wild west coast of the islands. At this time of year it's a flash of bright white in a landscape of brown fields and darkening December skies. #visitorkney #loveorkney

The area surrounding this old kirk in Rousay is full of archaeological sites so you can sometimes miss this when passing through. Stop and take time to explore it though - see island history and heritage in the headstones, touch the lichen and moss on the derelict walls, feel the sea breeze coming in from Eynhallow Sound...can you imagine being here? #visitorkney #loveorkney

This is part of the epic dune system at Tresness on the east coast of the Orkney island of Sanday. With the right tide there is a thin peninsula of sand stretching out along the north sea. Definitely one of the best beaches in Orkney. πŸ‘Œ Thanks to @poetic_mouse for the πŸ“· #visitorkney #loveorkney

This is definitely one of our favourite wild walk destinations in Orkney. Yesnaby Castle sea-stack withstands a ferocious pounding from the sea during the autumn and winter, but if you're planning to blow away the cobwebs over the coming months, rest assured that the view is well worth all the sea spray and salty air. Thanks to @ali.horne for the image. #visitorkney #loveorkney

We ❀ the texture of the Orkney shoreline, with its rocks, pebbles, sand and shells. The cool grey sky and cold blue sea only add to the atmosphere 😍 #visitorkney #loveorkney

Orkney was in the midst of some seriously stormy weather when @ellisoconnor visited earlier this month, but she still managed to capture a break in the clouds at Skara Brae, our fascinating Neolithic village. #visitorkney #loveorkney
