It's the last day of August (how?!), so time for a wrap-up, featuring Norbert. A decent month of reading, though I was disappointed in The Idiot and gave it up to reread The Time Traveler's Wife. Oh well. The rest were great. πŸ˜›
Big thanks to @bookish.harpy for the #HarpiesReadAug challenge. I didn't manage every day but it was fun and I loved seeing everyone's photos.

"Powell was that unthinkable monster, a witty woman who felt no obligation to make a single, much less final, down payment on Love or The Family." - Gore Vidal
Today's #HarpiesReadAug prompt is 'recommend a female author'. There are a lot to choose from, but I've gone for Dawn Powell. I haven't read much but I reckon Gore was right, as per, when he called her America's best comic novelist. Dawn Powell is wry and amusing and cutting, and just damn good. I'll definitely be reading more, and so should you.

Mini book haul, featuring my first Persephone books. Good grief, they are some good looking books. Not pictured: an equally attractive notebook.

Today's prompt for #HarpiesReadAug is favourite female author: without doubt, it's Iris. Her writing is exquisite (perfect even?). She's a must-read. My favourite is 'A Fairly Honourable Defeat' but I couldn't resist the Hokusai cover. 🌊

"The only trick of friendship, I think, is to find people who are better than you are - not smarter, not cooler, but kinder, and more generous, and more forgiving - and then to appreciate them for what they can teach you, and to try to listen to them when they tell you something about yourself, no matter how bad - or good - it might be, and to trust them, which is the hardest thing of all. But the best, as well."
You wanna talk long and difficult reads? A Little Life is long. A Little Life covers difficult topics. I know some people hate it because of this, but I adore it. It'll break your heart a thousand different ways and then you'll read it again. It's one of the best books I've read in the past few years, and I still think about it constantly.

Throwback to Lindsey Davis signing The Silver Pigs for me at my first CA Conference. I barely held it together I was so excited! "Best wishes"! Fun fact: this is actually my Dad's copy, but it's got my name on it now.

"Be ruthless" was Sarah Hall's advice on writing short stories. I imagine Dorothy Parker was pretty fucking ruthless, in life as in literature. And yes, this is the same copy Rory has in Gilmore girls, for those playing along. πŸ˜‰

I love the relationship between Elinor and Marianne Dashwood: two sisters who are different in many ways, who love each other but also like each other, which is more important, and who are friends as well as sisters.

A quick read, a great read.
