Valerie Hillings  Director and CEO @ncartmuseum, and art historian of modern and contemporary art

Sad to learn of the passing of Japanese artist Nobuo Sekine (1942-2019), who played a pioneering role in the Mono-ha (the School of Things) art movement in the late 1960s-mid-1970s. His often ephemeral and site-specific works brought together natural and industrial materials as in his “Phase of Nothingness—Water” (1968/2012), which is in the #guggenheimabudhabi collection. https://www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus/en/learn/schools/teachers-guides/phase-nothingness-water-19692012

Thank you to @tekaselman for moderating a fascinating panel on “The Audacity of Space” featuring North Carolina-based architects #TerryCanada, #BobPowell, and #PatriciaHarris as well as artist #HeatherHart, whose work “Southern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off” is now on view in the Ann and Jim Goodnight Park @ncartmuseum. https://ncartmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/39738. https://vimeo.com/334974484

It was an honor to travel with a group of colleagues from @ncculture led by #SecretarySusiHamilton to Yanceyville and Milton, NC. Highlights included the Caswell History Museum and Yanceyville Town Hall, which both feature works by #MaudGatewood (1934-2004), who is represented in the collection of @ncartmuseum. In Milton, we visited the home of 19th-century African-American furniture maker Thomas Day and saw some of his masterful creations there and at the #MuseumofMilton&;Visitors Center. Thanks, too, to #RhondaGriffin, for the tour of the recently reopened Gunn Memorial Public Library, and to our hosts in Milton. Great to spend time with #stacimeyer, #michellelanier, #angelathorpe, #katherinewhite, #timowens, #neellattimore, #billholmes

I wanted to share one more highlight from Frieze. I had the pleasure of seeing longtime friend and artist #susanhefuna. A selection of her early drawings are being shown by @piartworks. Her layered drawings were my first point of entry to her oeuvre, which also encompasses sculpture, video, installation, and textiles. The latter will be featured in a show opening @piartworks in London on May 23rd. https://www.piartworks.com/events/56-textiles-susan-hefuna/

Great day @friezeartfair, which I had the pleasure of visiting in the company of @ncartmuseum Director of Development @johnnyburleson and trustee @lizziemcnairy. Highlights included works by #redgrooms, #nataliefrank, #wadsworthjarrell, #roxypaine, #sheilahicks, and #betyesaar, among others. It was also great to see so many friends and colleagues.

Camp out @ncartmuseum in full swing. Great to see so many people in our Museum Park tonight, including not only campers but also prom photo takers. #artnaturepeople

Last night @ncstate the Department of Art + Design fibers and textiles + interactive media hosted the 18th #art2wear. I had the fortune to have a front row seat and marveled at the varied interpretations of the theme of Circularity by students from across the College of Design. Designers and models alike delivered an impressive showing, which underscored that working with an eye to sustainability and materials upcycling can yield stunning results. I was amazed by what first-year students achieved working with paper! Congratulations to #samanthabratze, #emersonburkhardt, #sarabailey, #evansmith, #keshaunaparker, #anthonyross, #katierant, and #emilysikkel.

Another great day visiting NC arts colleagues, today in Asheboro, Seagrove, and Star. My thanks to Kevin Eames, Department Head, Photography Program @randolphcommunitycollege who showed us their amazing facilities and introduced this remarkable program that trains budding photographers technically, conceptually, and practically. It was great to speak with @dhanrajemanuel about his courses in commercial photography. I enjoyed visiting with @randolphartsguild Executive Director Reggie Scott and Program Director Tamara Hill, who introduced current programs and an exciting future vision. @ncpotterycenter’s Executive Director Lindsey Lambert toured us around their museum and education center, and I was thrilled to see a display dedicated to @danieljohnstonpottery, whose commission for @ncartmuseum is nearing completion. @starworksnc Executive Director Nancy Gottovi showed studios, galleries, and their clay production areas. The glass artworks inside and out were magical. It was great to end the day at the studio of @benowenpottery. His kilns and samples of the palette for his pottery demonstrated the distinctive artistry of his work and that of earlier generations of his family. Thank you all for reinforcing for me the power and wonder of art in all mediums and across the state. Natural resources are also so strong in NC, and I want to thank my colleague Pat Simmons, Director and CEO of @nczoo for an inspiring brainstorming session about opportunities to collaborate. #gratitude

Remembering the brilliant artist #monirshahroudyfarmanfarmaian, who passed away on Saturday at 97. It was a privilege to learn about her remarkable oeuvre through the Guggenheim’s 2015 exhibition ( https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/monir) curated by @suzanne_mcotter and the research conducted by the #guggenheimabudhabi team when acquiring multiple works for that collection. I encourage all who don’t know about Monir’s career to learn about this pioneering Iranian artist. 💔 Photo: David Heald

So exciting to have our staff actively workshopping our mission statement! #wearethencma

Tonight I got a sneak peak of @ncartmuseum’s new exhibition Wim Botha: Still Life with Discontent, opening this weekend. Co-organized with @21chotels, this is the first North American show for South African artist Botha. Congrats to @jendasal, @ncartmuseum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, for curating our presentation, and to her and @alicegraystites, Chief Curator and Museum Director for @21chotels, for producing an excellent catalogue. #wimbotha

I started my day along with @ncartmuseum colleagues Katherine White and Billy Wilson with Mrs. Eby’s fourth grade class at Dixon Road Elementary School in Willow Springs, who shared their movement and artistic interpretations of #MayaAngelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” Great to see such talent and enthusiasm for learning through art and to meet Principal #KennethBennett. Billy and I then visited Rochelle Middle School in Kinston, where principal #FeliciaSolomon and a group of inspiring eighth graders introduced us to the art being made at this #A+School. They also shared their recent experience of visiting @ncartmuseum followed by one of our virtual tours. We were honored to be joined by #MichelleBurrows, A+ Schools of NC Program Director, Kinston Community Council for the Arts Executive Director #SandyLandis, and smART Kinston City Project Foundation founder #StephenHill. Sandy toured us through the Council for the Arts’ gallery, and she and Stephen took us to the artist studio collective #Art105 and the #KinstonMusicPark, which celebrates African American Musical Heritage and the African American Music Trails of NC. Stephen showed us the majestic sculpture by @thomassayreartist, “Flue,” inspired by tobacco barns, and the Arts and Culture District before we headed to @motherearthbrew to meet artists, art lovers, and even Mayor #DonHardy! Thank you, Kinston, for your warm welcome. #gratitude #nevergiveup #ncma
