Via our sister publication @skiesmag and @lloydhphoto: A Royal Canadian Air Force CH-147F Chinook from 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron performed a flypast over the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France on July 21 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, which is widely considered a defining moment for Canada. The victory came at a terrible cost with 10,602 casualties.
Photographed by Lloyd Horgan, the flypast over the National Vimy Memorial brought to an end a successful visit to the United Kingdom by 450 TACHEL Sqn for the first time. The Canadian Chinook, which was making its debut outside of North America, was flown to the UK by 429 Transport Sqn aboard a CC-177, which both attended the Royal International Air Tattoo that was held at Royal Air Forces (RAF) Fairford from July 13 to 16.
After attending the largest military air show in the world, the Chinook was flown to RAF Odiham, home to three RAF Chinook squadrons where Canadian crews had the opportunity to train with their RAF counterparts, which included the joint RCAF/RAF Chinook flight over France and a flyby of the Vimy Memorial, the Normandy Beaches and War Cemeteries where Canadians landed on D-Day during the Second World War.
