I seem to be coming across some really excellent burgers of late. First there was South Union Park's massive creation, then there were the few amazing winners by Three Buns at Potato Head Folk and today, this truffle-icious dreamboat ($26++) appeared. It is the only burger on the menu at @dempseycookhousenbar.sg so you won't miss it.
Can I start by raving about those buns? While eating, I could literally smell the smokiness from their time on the grill and trust me, that added a lot to my dining pleasure. Draped with a big slice of melted cheese, the beef patty was thick, juicy and cooked to a perfect pink within. I was very pleased that when I cut my burger in half, there was no icky blood trickling from the patty (don't you just hate it when that happens?). Anyway, this showed that the patty was beautifully-cooked and properly rested before being assembled. Unlike the others mentioned above, this burger had lettuce in it. Now, that is usually a no-no in my books because I've been traumatised by soggy buns due to wet lettuce being shoved in. However, the one here was dry (save for the truffle sauce which I'll talk about in a moment) and crisp. And that made all the difference. Now, for that truffle sauce. It's the creamy type and has a strong truffle flavour which you'd surely adore if you are a truffle-lover. I found the thin slices of pickles a brilliant addition as they helped to balance the overall richness with a tangy crunch. #BurppleBurgerMonth .

"The prawn salad is @fionatingx's favourite," explained Executive Sous Chef @dwaynemuang on why he had sent it to our table. This conversation took place post-meal when we'd already inhaled it. Well, his words simply reinforced my belief that our mutual friend has excellent taste.
Now, about the salad.
It's intriguing enough that the flavourful dressing has the word "champagne" in it but it also departs from the norm by boasting a slightly sweet richness which I reckon, is key to why the salad tastes terrific. But let's not forget to give each element due credit too. We had prawns that're really fresh and sweet while the mixed greens that'd been prettied up with tiny flowers, were perky and crisp. Lending its inimitable fattiness to round things off was half an avocado.
I recommend ordering this if you're seeking something healthy but are a bit tired of the usual.

I have walked past "Michael's Bitter Gourd Pig Organ Soup" stall (#01-131) inside Old Airport Road Hawker Centre many times but it was only tonight when I finally gave it a try.
The friendly hawker, whom I assume is named Michael, clearly takes a lot of pride in what he serves. And after trying his food, I support him wholeheartedly.
Item number one was what I got and I picked the large portion at $4.50. It comprised of thinly sliced bittergourd cooked with pig's stomach, large intestine, pork belly, lean pork, meatballs and liver. Everything tasted fresh, and the intestine and stomach were well-cleaned so there was absolutely no smell.
The highlight for me was the soup itself. Besides being MSG-free, it's concentrated with the goodness from cooking all those aforementioned ingredients in a pork-based stock.
The housemade chilli was still a lip-smacker of a dip in spite being less than fiery hot. Do get the side dish of braised peanuts too if you are into that because the one here is very well executed.
Michael also shared that prior to opening this stall, he used to run a well-known "kway teow mee" stall inside the former "Jackson Kopitiam" in MacPherson. He was inspired to create the dish he's selling now after coming across it in Johor. I am glad he went on that little trip across the causeway because this is one heck of a tasty thing.

An English Breakfast was what I kicked off my weekend with. This classic fry-up needs no introduction, and over at @theprovidore, their version ($20.50++) has the requisites of a fat, juicy pork sausage, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, toast, half a tomato and two eggs. You're suppose to tell the staff taking your order if you'd like your eggs poached, fried or scrambled. Personally, I am all for "fried" when it comes to this particular dish.

Admittedly, this ain't pretty but my goodness, it is truly the best bolognaise I've had in ages! And I don't say this lightly because the last time I felt so strongly about a plate of bolognaise pasta was close to 15 years ago in Hong Kong. It was at Cafe Vergnano in the IFC Mall and up to that point in my life, theirs was the tastiest version I'd ever eaten. So much so that I got a second plate on the spot.
Fast forward to last night when I had the bolognaise cooked by Chef @takashi2380 of @ristoranteluka. One mouthful of their handmade pasta in his stunning minced beef sauce, and I was instantly transported. It reminded me so much of the one I'd dreamed about and craved for over the years (sadly, it wasn't anywhere to be seen when I returned on subsequent trips). So I threw myself into this new discovery - to revel in its harmony of beautifully full and complex tasting sauce with al dente ribbons.
To me, it's an embodiment of joyful comfort food at its best.

The large size of this grilled ika (squid) had me concerned it would be rubbery but fortunately, it was expertly cooked. So no extra effort in chewing was needed.
For best enjoyment, make sure to have it with copious amounts of Japanese mayo, cold sake and boisterous conversations.

Here's another unique item I had during my omakase lunch at @sushikimurasg: the Tairagai or Japanese Pen Shell.
Once this is handed to you, it must be eaten in a matter of seconds. Otherwise you aren't maximising its "oishii-ness" (deliciousness) potential.
Due to having been grilled over charcoal, the large oval slice of shellfish was fragrant with a faint smokiness. I like how it tasted - a slightly firmer and savoury version of the more common scallop if you will.
Eating it immediately also ensured the toasted seaweed was shatteringly crispy when I bit into it, which definitely added to the pleasure.

Reasonably priced and tasty, the "zichar" dishes at Chuan Kee Seafood was a hit with our group when we were there for dinner. Our order of 10 dishes cost us $275 in total (excluding drinks) and our satisfaction with them ranged from "high" to "very high".
My favourites would be the Salted Egg Crab (I love its no-nonsense sauce which was grainy with salted egg yolk), Curry Fish Head (the spicy gravy is not overly "lemak" and there's plenty of "tau kee" and "tau pok"), Assam Fish Head (please see my earlier post for details about this) and the Teochew-style Steamboat (it has a lot of yam, "ti poh" and white cabbage in that opaque sweet soup plus the fish tasted really fresh).
For dessert, they have a freezer stocked with lime and cola flavoured ice popsicles that you can help yourself to as many times as you like!
Verdict: I need to return soon for more! With my parents in tow.

Introduced by Steven, a good friend of @angelineongsuming's, this hidden gem of a "zichar" place in an industrial building area proved to be full of tasty surprises.
We're a greedy bunch so we ordered a total of 10 dishes, including the popular curry fish head and the assam fish head. Both turned out to be really shiok! The latter, shown above, had a spicy gravy that's mouthwateringly tangy with a hint of sweet. It had a concentrated consistency so you know there's enough "rempah" in it. Very importantly, the fish which was simmered with ladyfingers, white onions and tomatoes, tasted fresh.
I highly recommend this if you are drawn to dishes with a spicy kick and a tang.

This is an evolution of a creation by @arentijustawesome at one of Artichoke's "Young Guns Brunch Takeover" event that took place many months ago. It's all "grown up" now to become a streamlined, elegant thing but still packing that in-your-face flavour combination.
Renamed the "Bacon & Crab Sandwich" ($25++), this has a slab of the infamous Artichoke maple-glazed bacon and a heap of spicily-seasoned crab pate on a slice of rye sourdough. Bonding these smoky-sweet and savoury elements nicely together are a sunny-side-up fried egg, some refreshing, crunchy cabbage and a fusion form of harissa (which is a Tunisian chilli pepper paste).
If you are seeking something bold for brunch, this sandwich should do the trick.

Wagyu beef - barbecued over charcoal ($32++) and sliced neatly for ease of eating. Besides having a lovely smokiness, this was buttery-soft and just knee-weakeningly delicious. This platter was meant to be shared but I think I finished most of it. #whathappenswhenyouarenotlooking 😁.
