“So, I have worked in the music industry for the last five to six years predominantly. I lead quite a hectic lifestyle and just a lot of unsociable hours a lot of drinking and eating the wrong things and to be honest I felt shit, I felt ill. I realised that if I was going to sustain A) that lifestyle or another that would be better. I needed to make some changes. So stumbled across a couple of things, watched a couple of movies and one sunday went downstairs and emptied the fridge of what I deemed at the time to be nice cuts of meat. I went cold turkey completely the next day and have never looked back. ”

“My husband turned vegan before me and because his dad had a stroke so he started researching what can cause strokes, diet.
We decided for the animals as we love animals, for the planet and our health we needed to turn vegan.”

“Well I mean for me the first initial thing was when I was eating a meat based diet I was quite weighty. So then I just did a bit of research briefly on the health aspect of it. You know I always knew about vegetarian but my knowledge on veganism wasn't really clued up at all. Obviously I did some reasearch and tried it out a few times so like these meat free mondays and so on, gradually I started taking it on board. I am also a chef by trade so I use my knowledge from that and the new found knowledge to adapt because obviously I had been trained a conventional way of using animal products. So it was like just a big eye opener for me that I don't have to use eggs or you know I don't have to use cows milk as there are a lot of alternatives out there. I was raised in the rastafarian faith so when I was growing up anyway we were kind of like technically vegan anyway but as I got older I started to eat meat like during my teenage years. So It was always in me to go that way but when I went through my adolescent years I just wanted to try everything you know. Then through that I really just connected all the dots. I realised what was happening behind the scenes to the animals and also what's happening to the environment also. It was a no brainer afterwards you know. It only took me to watch a few documentaries and I was like wow.”

“It started with me going on a low carb diet because I'm a diabetic. I have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and I had a stroke two and a half years ago so I'm making a lot of changes. After looking at a low carb diet a few days ago I saw they had on there an option for vegan recipes. I saw @veganlife_live was coming up so I thought let's go and find out what it’s all about. I've been listening to everybody being encouraged by a lot of people and I went to the Veganuary talk which was fabulous. I thought, why not I can do this it’s easy.”

“I wanted to make the next step. I became really really conscious of the animal welfare side of things. Going vegan has opened my eyes to a whole new massive field of animal abuse down to the leather trade and everything else like that. Slowly making that transition as we are not buying it but still have boots and clothes from the past. The food side was straight away so now just onto the clothing and everything like that and hope to be 100% very soon.”

“It's quite a layered answer. I got into recovery, I was living a life that I am not very proud of and suddenly my first kind of psychic shift around it all was that I started to become aware of how precious my body is and that I am a spiritual being having a human experience and I started to become very aware of what I was putting into my body. Then I fell pregnant and I had this immediate distaste for meat, I just couldn't eat it, it made me feel really uncomfortable and unwell. I’m from an African culture that is very meat heavy so I was brought up on meat and it was instant I just couldn't eat it. I just didn't like the texture or the smell. And now my daughter is coming up to three and she doesn't eat meat she’s been brought up vegan. It’s been a journey but don't get me wrong it hasn't been easy there have been some tough times but I love it. Shortly after I had my daughter I met this wonderful lady who is the founder of @fatsalad and I started working for her. It’s a vegan company so it all fell into place.”

“I no longer wanted to contribute to animal suffering and cruelty. I became an animal rights activist at the age of 15 and here I am now 21 years later age 36 doing the same thing but now doing it in a way I can write books and impact more people.”

“My father at the time was vegetarian and he was thinking of going vegan so I thought yea alright i'll give it a go as well. I’m used to it now, eat a lot of junk food probably don't eat as well as I should but yea. I also read a lot of literature around it like Empty Cages by Tom Reagan, that's a good one."

“It’s a very long story. I am now a senior citizen. I first became vegetarian at the age of 13 because my uncle had a very trendy girlfriend who talked me into being vegetarian and I laughed at the time as I thought it was hilarious. My uncle is only 9 years older than me and he said try being a vegetarian for a month you will never eat meat again. My favorite food at that time was pork pie so at the end of the four weeks being vegetarian I sat down with a pork pie and a tomato. I ate the tomato but I couldn't eat the pork pie. I was shocked. The irony was my uncle changed girlfriends and went back to eating meat but I never did. When I got to 21 or 22 I watched a TV programme about dairy farming showing calves being taken away from their mummies, not even with one feed and I was shocked. Back in the 1970’s there wasn't much about being vegan but I knew that veganism existed. So at this point I cut everything out and after 6 months I became very run down and very anemic. I very reluctantly and guiltily went back to eating dairy but over the years this vegan thing kept eating away at me. I would go through phases of trying it, not understanding. Fast forward 30 years there's been an explosion of vegan products, vegan restaurants, vegan shops. About 8 years ago I had my cholesterol tested because there are a lot of heart problems in our family. Allegedly I had raised cholesterol. I had already retrained as an Alexander Technique teacher which is a mind and body technique about the best you can be physiologically. So when I had this raised cholesterol I looked at the doctor and said don't even go there with statins I'm not interested. He said well given your lifestyle the fact you don't smoke you don't drink and you're a vegetarian I'll give you this diet sheet. Then it hit me. On that diet sheet it said cut out hard cheese, butter, milk bla bla bla. So I bought 5 books: how to go vegan, vegan with a vengeance, and then really researched the food groups. I've been vegan ever since and I would like to think I am healthier than I ever have been and I love it.”
