What an incredible first day on the 2017 VCS Silicon Valley Business Plunge!
The first stop was at Google, where our 24 high schoolers met with four Google employees from product engineering, business operations, legal, and product management. Some of the career advice our students received included: Be open to everything, don't stop learning, expect change, be true to yourself, and failure is a learning experience.
Next, the students visited Facebook at 1 Hacker Way. After a tour of the amazing city-like campus, the students sat with three Facebook employees (HR, engineering, and tech writing) and were told that “curiosity is the key to life, make the time to be the person you want to be, not knowing is an opportunity not a fear, and start networking now.” The third and final stop on Day 1 was HP, where the focus was on growth in business services, commercial printing and packaging, and 3D printing, which is allowing HP to tap the $12 trillion global manufacturing marketplace. The group explored half a dozen new hardware products and met with two 3D product managers (one a PhD and expert in human-computer interaction) and the Chief of Staff to the CEO. Their advice: Commit yourself to being life-long learners; break things, make mistakes, clean up the mess and move forward; and develop a career roadmap.
