Valley First  Serving British Columbians since 1947. A division of First West Credit Union. Check out our #notlefttochance contest rules below!

Diana Stirling, Valley First member and owner of LocoLanding Adventure Park in Penticton and The Peach Ice Cream Shop shares her most exciting personal goal and why it's so important to remove doubt from your life. #IWD2018

If you could eliminate a workplace hurdle for all women, what would it be?

To eliminate doubt. I’ve never been mindful of whether I’m the only woman around the boardroom table, or involved in a project, or asked for my opinion. I see people – not men & women. I see our collective strengths, value, expertise, leadership. And I’ve never doubted that someone shouldn’t be there because of their gender. If you’re not conscious of it, it’s not an issue. Doubt kills more dreams than fear. And fear kills growth.
What personal goal excites you the most right now?

Right now, my goal is to make positivity louder. Whether it’s in my home, at the businesses, or within our community. Positivity goes hand in hand with Optimism – which I truly believe is the secret sauce behind all successful entrepreneurs.

Chief Operating Officer at First West Credit Union, Shelley Besse, talks about the strong mentors she's had throughout her life. #IWD2018 “My mom really inspired me and I thank both her and my father for their strong influence in building my strong dedicated work ethic and strong set of values. Over the course of my career I have had several female mentors – my first was someone who really pushed me and made me believe that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to – I wouldn’t have done my MBA if she hadn’t inspired/encouraged me. I also had the opportunity to work with a female executive coach who taught me many things but the two that really stand out are ‘Asking yourself how do you want to show up’ – how do you want people to think and feel about what you have to say, what frame of mind will you be in? This approach really challenged me to think about how I wanted others to see me as a leader. The second was that ‘If you wanted to sit at the leadership table you have to believe you have the ability’. Really this was about having confidence in myself as a leader.”

Today is International Women's Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. We are proud to celebrate some of the amazing women that are connected to us whether it be our employees, members or community partners. Throughout the day, we’ll be sharing thoughts, advice and stories from some of these incredible leaders. Feel free tell us your story as well! #IWD2018

CONTEST! What are your retirement dreams? Share a picture with by tagging us and using the hashtag #notlefttochance and you could win $150! 🗽🏰 You've heard of this place.🗼🏯 A famous writer lived in that building and now you follow in their ghost steps. A revolutionary figure stood in defiance on this street corner. Now in faint echoes you can almost hear their voices. Here Napoleon spilled wine, there Rasputin bought bread. Battles were fought, empires forged, blood soaked these cobblestones. Here was history wrought and there you will chase it down to the ends of the earth. 🌉 #traveltheworld

Since 2010, Vernon’s @thesproutedfig has been serving up fresh, farm-sourced food. In that time it has cemented its reputation as a must-visit local eatery. For Beatrice Weir and David Scarlatescu, the pull of The Sprouted Fig recently compelled this mother-son duo to move from loyal customers to passionate owners. “I visited The Sprouted Fig with my mum for the first time when I was 13,” says David. “I recall my mum saying in 2011: ‘If this place ever goes up for sale, I would love to have it.’ I replied, OK I will buy it for you.” Fast forward a few years, the owners wanted to sell and David made good on his promise. The recent purchase was sweetened by the fact it came as a gift as Beatrice celebrated her 50th birthday. With backgrounds in nutrition, both Beatrice and David highly value nutritious, made from scratch products that leave customers well-fed and well-nourished. The exact fare The Sprouted Fig has become so well-known for delivering. But, buying a business doesn’t just happen. One critical requirement for any would-be owner is insurance. Cue Valley First Insurance Services’ Robbie Hoyte. “Robbie was originally referred to me when I was working on another business opportunity,” says David. “We’ve been working together for a year and have developed a really strong relationship. Insurance can be a confusing business. But, Robbie is accessible, delivers a clear and simple experiences and really takes the time to explain what coverage we should have in place to ensure we’re fully protected.” On choosing Valley First as a partner, Beatrice says: “The important thing is the people behind the business. If you can find a company with the best people, you’ve found a winner. At Valley First, the team really prioritizes relationships. It’s important for us to work with people who love what they’re doing because we love what we’re doing.”
