Architecturally interesting homes in & around Tulsa. Every house has a story to tell. Tales of a Tulsa home or architecture? #tulsahomes

The Chesley Coleman Herndon House - An Italianate built in 1922 in Maple Ridge.
Herndon was a Tennessee transplant who made an early start in Tulsa as an attorney working on land leases. He defeated William Skelly several times over Osage Indian land disputes. Eventually Skelly asked to meet with Herndon privately and out of that meeting came the Skelly Oil Company with Herndon as the second in command. A 1932 Fortune Magazine article stated that "Skelly Oil Company is a great success because of the different temperaments of its top executives... in this company, William Skelly is the accelerator and Chesley Herndon is the brake. (Wiki)" The former opponents worked together for over 30 years and are even buried in close proximity. #tulsa #tulsahistory #oklahoma

We cannot let the year pass without mentioning the passing of our friend John Brooks Walton. This pic was taken on our last visit with him in his office.
He was a polymath but more importantly a kind soul. When we first got to know him he took us to his "warehouse& #34; of Tulsa artifacts - what stayed with us was not his impressive collection but the fact that he made sure the heat was left on and that there was food for several homeless men who lived near that small space behind his office. His book series on historical homes became friends to me - drawing me into the history of the city and giving countless hours of exploration destinations. #indebted #jbwalton #tulsa #tulsahistory

Beautiful remodel by @aherrold and @dherrold - they added a wing and kept with the half timbering in the new addition - well done! There are some pics of the process @herroldrenovation

BEYER/WALLING HOUSE
This info is directly from the Tulsa Preservation Commission:
This Federalist influenced, Georgian home was built by J. W. Beyer, a prominent builder. One of the unusual features of the house is a mezzanine level library which was added by the Wallings. This library opens onto the center landing of the main staircase. In 1925, the home was purchased by Frank Walling, an early day oil operator and vice-president of The Gilcrease Oil Company. The Wallings occupied the house for forty-seven years through 1972.
