The #humanquiltproject is an ongoing effort to photograph designers that form the creative community of Portland and beyond. These are portraits of both the artists and the work they make. ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️ ◾️
18: Thomas Bradley. This projected image is actually from a page in an old clip art book that Thomas is repurposing. "Clip art monthly subscription services began some time in the 40s and lasted until the rise of desktop publishing. The small CD-Rom-toting magazine-sized clip art books now commonplace in art department shelves replaced the 18x24 poster-sized dinosaurs of clip art’s past. When taken out of context, the layout of these book pages become compositional fascinations and works of art in themselves. It is my goal to draw attention to this bygone element of our visual past and to consider not only the artist responsible for creating the original inked art, but also the production artist that arranged them on the book page and the thousands of designers who appropriated these images...”

Saturday's opening night of the #humanquiltshow was an absolute blast. A million thanks to all of the beautiful humans that made it out to see the work. Twenty million thanks to each of the 20 individuals who took the time to let me take their picture for this. I'm filled with gratitude.

Apologies for all the self-promotion and this self-portrait. I'm hosting my first art show tomorrow night Oct 14th at Beacon Sound from 7pm till late. I'll be showing 20 prints from the #humanquiltproject. Portraits of designers, artists, and cool people that I am profoundly inspired by. ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
Free beer, a DJ set by the Burrito Boys, and limited-edition books for sale. Come party!

Show prep can feel like a never-ending process, but slowly beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

17: Eric Reigert. The projected image is from an album cover he designed: "I wanted to create a modern piece, that riffed on the album covers of surrealist Mark Wilkinson. This piece was my take on the song "Rat Salad" by Black Sabbath. It invokes the movement I feel listening to the 2:30 instrumental. The name of the song is pretty badass too."

15: Rob Lewis. Rob's probably one of the most thoughtful designers I've ever met. In addition to directing at @kampgrizzly he keeps up an art practice which you can see at @trillmurray. This photo was taken during a conversation about book design. I forgot who Rob was quoting, but a big takeaway for me was "Good minimalism is when you can remove any element, and the book ceases to be a book."
