This minute piece of land lies off the north coast of County Donegal and is known as Glashedy Island. The Gaelic origins of the name have been roughly translated to mean “green garment or cloak”, presumably relating to the lush green pastures that blanket the top of the lonely rock. The island has been associated with many fables over the years involving pirates, gold and even mermaids! One story goes that fairies rest on the picturesque island en route to their summer pastures. While another myth states that during the 19th century the island was used for illegally distilling Poitín – a traditional Irish beverage. This is what we would consider a hidden gem of the Wild Atlantic Way! 📸(@garethwrayphotography) #loveireland #ireland #irland #irlande #irlanda #discoverireland #instaireland #visitireland #wildatlanticway #donegal #hiddengem #island #myths #poitin #glashedyisland

We love this unusual angle of the Poolbeg Chimneys, an iconic Dublin sight. For those approaching the port from the Irish Sea, the slender red and white structures have been a ‘welcome to Dublin’ sign for almost 50 years – the first chimney was constructed back in 1969! Once industrially purposeful, the chimneys were decommissioned for use in 2010, but were lobbied to remain as a landmark and a reflection of the city’s industrial progress. Standing at 207 metres high, the pair are much loved by Dubliners. They can be spotted in U2’s music video ‘Pride’ (In the Name of Love) and even became home to a group of rare Falcons a few years ago! So, whether you’re taking a stroll on Sandymount strand or sauntering through the heart of the city, keep an eye out for this historic duo. 📸 @david.soanes #loveireland #ireland #irland #irlande #irlanda #discoverireland #instaireland #visitireland #lovindublin #dublin #poolbeg #poolbegchimneys #history

Like a piece of land that consciously decided to be in isolation, the St Patrick’s Purgatory in Lough Derg, County Donegal is the epitome of serenity. Operating as a Christian pilgrimage site since the 5th century, today the island welcomes visitors from all walks of life for retreats, family days and quiet reflection. Long associated with Ireland’s patron saint, St Patrick, this secluded spot has been mentioned in the works of Ireland’s most famous writers, including Patrick Kavanagh, WB Yeats and Seamus Heaney. 📸 @ihaveadarksoul #loveireland #ireland #irland #irlande #irlanda #discoverireland #instaireland #visitireland #wildatlanticway #hiddengem #donegal #loughderg #pilgrimage #stpatrick #retreat

Off the rugged coast of Kerry along the Wild Atlantic Way lies the Skellig Islands. Jutting out from the Atlantic Ocean, the larger of the two, Skellig Michael, was originally home to monks way back in the 6th century. During their time of solitude on the islands, with great determination and strength, the monks built stone stairways and huts that remain to this day. While Little Skellig is home to one of the largest colonies of northern gannets in the world. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael has become a popular place to visit and has even made an impression in Hollywood. The instantly recognisable monastic isle features in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as Luke Skywalker's stunning Jedi retreat. 📸(@robert_ziegenfuss) #loveireland #ireland #irland #irlande #irlanda #discoverireland #instaireland #visitireland #wildatlanticway #skelligs #starwars #kerry #skelligmichael #skelligislands #islands

As the Irish poet Seamus Heaney once wrote, ‘I had come to the edge of the water, soothed by just looking, idling over it’. In honour of what would have been his 79th birthday today, we thought we would dedicate this post to one of our literary heroes. 📸(@carashanley) #loveireland #ireland #irland #irlande #irlanda #discoverireland #instaireland #visitireland #seamusheaney #poetry #fridayfeeling

Step back in time at the medieval Dunluce Castle, County Antrim. If these walls could talk we’re sure they’d tell us a tale or two! One particular legend that resonates with us is the story of the castle’s kitchen crumbling from the grasp of the cliff edge to the sea below, taking seven of the castle’s staff members to a watery grave!
