Boko Haram survivor YaKaka, 19, stands beneath the following quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. "We are determined ... to work and fight until justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

YaKaka regularly prays for the rescue of other girls kidnapped by Boko Haram and dreams of being able to support herself and is now working towards a degree in International Relations with support from Too Young to Wed.

Ya Kaka, 19, takes a photo of her first bowl of Asian style soup. Wary at first, she reported that it was delicious! •

Former Boko Haram abductees Hauwa and Ya Kaka, are here in the Washington DC to share their stories with lawmakers and advocate for the thousands of other girls in northern Nigeria who remain kidnapped and forcibly wed to militants. •

Ya Kaka’s fate could have been different had the Nigerian government moved faster to rescue them. “We were not taken to forest immediately, but there were no attempts to rescue us in the month we were there.” she said. “Had they responded immediately, we could have been rescued there. The government should assist and rescue the girls that are still in the bush.” •

Please continue to follow their journey here on @Instagram. Or come meet them in person at @tooyoungtowed’s Inaugural Gala on March 8th in NYC. See the link in our bio for more information. Photo by @stephsinclairpix #girls #tooyoungtowed #endchildmarriage #canonM100 @canonusa @canoncps

Ya Kaka, 19, and Hauwa, 18, at Dulles International Airport. At a time when violence against women dominates the international conversation, Hauwa, 17, and fellow kidnap victim Yakaka, 19, both of whom were forced to marry insurgents before escaping the fighters’ grasp, have traveled 6,000 miles to Washington, D.C., eager to share their harrowing tales with lawmakers and UN officials over the next 16 days. “The situation was terrible. I was so afraid living with people I didn’t know. I finally got the courage to leave,” said Hauwa, whose infant son died of malnutrition as she fled with him through the bush to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. “The only thing I want now is to go to school. What happened to me has ruined every part of my life. The only hope I have is if I can get an education,” she said when we interviewed her in late 2016. Since then Too Young to Wed has supported both their educations, as well as all of those interviewed for our Child, Bride, Mother: Nigeria story. Please follow their journey as they transform from #survivor to #advocate. #tooyoungtowed #girls #girlseducation #endchildmarriage #letgirlslearn

School girls leave a mosque under construction in Maiduguri, Nigeria, where some Boko Haram abductees have found refuge. Last week, 110 girls went missing after an attack on a school in northeast Nigeria by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. The fate of the girls is not yet known, though families fear they have abducted as brides for the extremists, who in 2014 kidnapped 276 girls from a boarding school in Chibok. About 100 of the Chibok girls have yet to return to their families nearly four years later.

For the next 16 days @tooyoungtowed will be hosting two Boko Haram survivors who were forced to into marriage and early motherhood before their escape. They shared their stories with us in late 2016 for our Child, Bride, Mother: Nigeria project published in the NYT Sunday Review. @tooyoungtowed has since supported the girls in our project with scholarships. Please follow our feed to see their journey from survivors to advocates unfold. They coming to the US to share their stories with lawmakers and will be honored on March 8th, International Women’s Day, at our inaugural gala in NYC, (for more info please visit the link in our profile). The following week, they will be part of our delation to the United Nations’ 62nd Commission on the Status of Women, the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
