Todo en flor

Hace mucho tiempo que no veía un barquito de papel flotando || Been a while since I last saw a paper boat floating around #Bogotá #rogeliosalmona #barcos #navegando #reflejos #papel #hojas #thisiscolombia #everydaymacondo

The last image of the takeover I did last week with my work on Rikers Island. #Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Rikers Island as seen from College Point in Queens, NYC. #rikersisland #outofsightoutofmind #massincarceration #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla

#Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Margaret Burton, mother of Jahmal Lighfoot, who was physically assaulted by Rikers Correctional Officers in 2012, is interviewed outside the Bronx Criminal Court on February 17, 2016. Her son suffered several injuries and had his nose and eye sockets broken after the security chief at the time, Eliseo Perez, ordered correctional officers to assault him because he had "locked eyes" with him. He and five other CO's were convicted on June 6th of 2016. | #rikersisland #trial #outofsightoutofmind #massincarceration #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #nyc #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla

#Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Alvin Jeffries watches TV at his apartment in Downtown Brooklyn days after being released from Rikers Island. Alvin went through a long and difficult process of clearing his name after a wrongful arrest and time spent in Rikers. Although all of the charges were dropped when CCTV footage demonstrated Alvin was innocent, he didn't have any money as the Veterans Association stoped subsidizing his food stamps and rent. "It is the aggravation of it, just how aggravating it is" Alvin said after going through a depression period and thoughts concerning suicide. He is currently in the process of suing the city for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. #rikersisland #outofsightoutofmind #massincarceration #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #postrelease #wrongfularrest #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla

Repost from @opensocietyfoundations "We believe that a twenty-first century justice system must acknowledge the multiple harms that incarceration, and Rikers in particular, has caused hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, their families and their communities. And it must acknowledge that these hard fall disproportionately on communities of color. To heal and restore hope, jail must become a last resort rather than the path of last resistance" Judge Jonathan Lippman, chair of the Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform.
The text above is part of the introduction section of the recently released report that announced that Rikers Island would be closing in a ten year period. In addition the commission concluded that many aspects of the system have to be rethought, it proposes eliminating money bails, moving minor drug possession from criminal to civil courts, raising the criminal justice responsibility age from 16 to 18 and keeping low-level misdemeanor cases out of the criminal courts by creating community-based service providers that would assess and determine what social service has to be done. #Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Ronald Spear was brutally beaten up to death inside Rikers Island by a correctional officer while another CO restrained him. The city of New York paid 2.75 million dollars to settle a lawsuit by Spears' family. The officers involved tried to cover up the incident but were later found guilty on charges related to his murder and obstruction of justice. #rikersisland #outofsightoutofmind #massincarceration #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #nyc #grave #cemetery #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla

#Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Alvin Jeffires, 65, steps off the Q100 bus the night of his release from Rikers Island just after trying to recover his property. A Vietnam veteran, Alvin retired in New York after the war and lived from his army pension until he was wrongfully arrested after being mistakenly arrested by the NYPD. All the charges were later dropped when CCTV footage demonstrated Alvin was innocent. He said, "I never bothered nobody in my life, I don't look for trouble, I'm not violent, only in the war because I had to... not even a transit ticket, clean". Alvin struggled for months after his release from Rikers Island as the American Veteran Association withdrew his food stamps and the monetary support he used to pay his rent. He is currently in the process of suing the city for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. #rikersisland #outofsightoutofmind #massincarceration #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #wrongfularrest #release #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla

#Repost from @opensocietyfoundations It has been announced, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a ten year plan to CLOSE Rikers Island. From my part @tomasmantilla, a shoutout to all the social organizations and to all of those who fought to make this possible || Attendees speak at a rally to protest the death of Kalief Browder in front of City Hall. Kalief was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack when he was sixteen years old and sent to Rikers. He spent three years inside, two of them in solitary confinement. His trial kept being postponed and he refused to take a plea deal maintaining his innocence. After being released and the charges dismissed his took his own life on June 6th 2015. #rikersisland #outofsightoutofmind #shutdown #criminaljusticesystem #newyorkcity #nyc #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #opensocietyfoundations #takeover #tomasmantilla #billdeblasio

#Repost from @opensocietyfoundations Yahaira De Jesus comes out of a housing project in her neighborhood in West Harlem where she was trying to buy a dose of crack cocaine one hour after being released from Rikers Island.
The first 24 hours after someone is released are crucial to their reintegration process and in many of the cases, no reintegration services at all are provided for former inmates with mental health issues or drug addiction abuse.
