Wallpaper motif blends two motifs from the archive of Italian artist and designer #PieroFormasetti (1913-88). The pattern of pomegranate trees is taken from a 1940s fabric and the mischievous monkeys were created in the 1950s for ‘Dulciora’, a patisserie in Milan.
Pomegranates and monkeys also have royal associations. The pomegranate was the royal badge, or emblem, of Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife, and of daughter Mary I, who was born in Greenwich in 1516. Catherine also kept a pet monkey, probably from her native Spain. As pets, monkeys were regarded as symbols of worldly sophistication. #history #wallpaper #monkeys #interiordesign
