Thanks to 📹 videographer and wife @kmacvey for being there on short notice…. I stopped at Lake Elmo Coffee (@lakeelmocoffee) on the way to church this morning. My eyes and ears immediately honed in on two gentlemen who were playing an acoustic set. One of them was playing an all koa (Hawaiian hardwood) Taylor, the other was playing a beautiful G&L Telecaster. I’ve been ogling and enamored by a different Taylor all koa K24- or a mostly koa w/Sitka spruce top K14 - since starting to play again. I asked a couple of questions, and the guys were friendly and kind - “Hey, do you play? Do you wanna play?” I said, “Sure, why not? But I’ll need to come back, I need to run to make it to (church) service.” I realized I was committed, then made some notes about some riffs/tunes/tunings that might flow in a mini-set. I made my 2nd trip back to Lake Elmo Coffee and did my first ever open mic. Thanks to the guys (Steve and Danny) and Bill (manager) for being cool, welcoming, and letting me use their gear. It was a treat to listen to them perform. It was fun - thinking about doing it again some time, this time with more than 90 minutes to think about it. ;-) There is something about the koa tone that is special and unique to my ears - it’s the midrange that is simply just right, sonically. It’s time for me to finally buy that Taylor + Henriksen acoustic amp after window shopping the last 2 years.
