It was the start of the school year, 5th grade, third day to be exact. Same routine; got up, washed up and dressed, ate then off we went. Same route, but little did I know I would be approaching a newness in my life’s journey.
As my dad and I drove to the front of the school, where he dropped me off many times before, and just before I leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek, as I always did ever since kindergarten, he said “Hey Kiddo, you’re a big man now so how about we shake hands. Put your hand in my hand and give it a firm grip and shake. That’s how men do”
And so I did, with no hesitation, disappointment, and with all my emotions and feelings still intact. In retrospect, I believe that’s when I became a young man of sorts. I left that car that day with a new found sense of self, and growth of love shared with my dad.
Needless to say when I became an adult, and me and my dad would share a hug (as we often did), I would steal a kiss on the cheek from time to time. And he didn’t mind at all.
So if you catch me blowing kisses in the air, don’t think I’m crazy. Just know, just like air, even though you can’t see souls, doesn’t mean they aren’t there.
He’s always with me, my Superman, aka my #Dad.
