Sunset at the jetty.

Scene from the road: someone made sure that I got to see the mountains at dusk today and that made all the difference.

Scene from the road: sluices and pans used for artisanal gold mining at the place where the N’Mai and Mali rivers meet to form the Irrawaddy. Kachin State, Myanmar

Met a woman today who organizes her community to protest against corrupt Chinese dam companies and makes/sells her own Kachin alcohol. What a woman. | This project is made possible by the @pulitzercenter and there is much, much more to come.

Myeik port at sunset. I started the month in the southern part of the country and am ending it today with the northern part. ✈️

An illegal charcoal production facility in Tanintharyi, Myanmar.

Illegal harvesters, middlemen, owners, buyers and more... the mangrove charcoal industry has many faces behind it, with a majority of people involved in the illicit industry because they have few other prospects for income. Photos from myself with words by @wudanyan forthcoming.

Just came down from the mountains and found out I’m heading back up to the *other* mountains in a few days which made think about the *other other* mountains I was nestled between a few weeks ago. ⛰ I miss my friends and apartment and flower vendor, but then again I wouldn’t trade this life for anything. Lahe, Nagaland, is the largest city in this part of the Self-Administered Zone. It’s a place where looking at the mountains helps tell you the coming weather and huge animals skulls are nonchalantly laying around behind various buildings.

I’m in Naga on a Sunday so of course I went to church.
