James Glossop: Behind the Shot

This image shows Professor Henry Segerman of Oklahoma State University holding a “half 120-cell four dimensional Platonic solid”, which forms part of a forthcoming exhibition called Brilliant Geometry at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Photographer, James Glossop, used a 24-70mm lens and set his camera to tungsten white balance to turn the daylight-balanced projection in the background to a vivid blue. “For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to "give a meaning" to the world, one has to feel oneself involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, a discipline of the mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry.” ― Henri Cartier-Bresson

The shadows of these three farmers stretch out eerily across a field as they trudge home after a hard day working in the sun. Each wearing wide-brimmed straw hats, which shield their faces from the burning rays, the three family members follow each other in single-file, between ridges in the ploughed field in the countryside of Myanmar.
