Kobe Paras (photo collage) put on a dazzling show with 20 pts 8 rebs 4 assts 7 stls 4 blks as Gilas demolished Myanmar 129-34 in the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur tonight ... Gilas' unforgiving defense forced 41 turnovers on Myanmar and limited the hapless squad to 7 pts in the 1st period, 3 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd before relaxing in the 4th ... Myanmar went 0-of-2 from the line in the entire game while Gilas shot 24-of-31 ... Gilas had more rebs 51-29, more assts 21-6 and shot 60% from the field to Myanmar's 24% ... seven Gilas players scored in double figures as Toto Jose fired 22, Kobe 20, Troy Rosario 14, Mike Tolomia 13, Christian Standhardinger 12 pts with 11 rebs, Carl Bryan Cruz 12 pts and Kevin Ferrer 11 ... Philippines goes for win #3 against host Malaysia tomorrow ... congrats to coach Jong Uichico and assistant coach Jimmy Alapag for the masterful job on the bench and the players for the total domination ... Baser Amer sat out the contest @smartgilas #SoutheastAsianGames2017 @_kokoparas #labanpilipinaspuso @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @pbaconnect

The Philippines survived a scare and hacked out an 81-74 decision over Thailand, reinforced by Thai-Am Tyler Lamb of UCLA/Long Beach State, to kick off the campaign at the SEA Games in KL last night ... Gilas raced to a 13-pt lead in the 1st period then Thailand outscored the Philippines 47-38 in the next 2 periods before wilting in the 4th ... believe it or not, Thailand had more rebs 50-42 (19-14 offensive rebs) and more 3-pt hits 10-6! But Gilas broke the Thais back with more turnover pts 29-9, more assts 19-12 and more pts in the paint 44-28 ... Thailand committed 23 turnovers while Gilas only 12 ... Troy Rosario had 16 pts 10 rebs, Christian Standhardinger 15 pts 10 rebs, Ray Ray Parks (top left) 14 pts 3 assts 4 stls, Kiefer Ravena (right photo) 11 pts 4 rebs 2 assts 2 stls and Baser Amer 6 pts 3 rebs 10 assts ... Philippines had only 5 assts in 1st half (only 1 in the 2nd period) but delivered 14 in the 2nd half as coach Jong Uichico got Gilas to play as a team not try to dismantle Thailand with individual moves ... next game is against Myanmar tomorrow (Tuesday) ... congrats Gilas for the tough stand in the homestretch to escape the upset axe! #SoutheastAsianGames2017 @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @pbaconnect #labanpilipinaspuso @ray1parks @kieferravena15

GlobalPort evened its record to 2-2 with a 102-90 win over Kia in the PBA Governors Cup at Araneta tonight ... Stanley Pringle (left, with coach Franz Pumaren) earned Best Player honors as he hit 21 pts and compiled 7 rebs 4 assts in 37:33 mins ... import Murphey Holloway (right) fired 29 pts and grabbed 18 boards ... GlobalPort went on an 11-0 tear to start the 4th period and Kia never revovered from the assault ... Newly-acquired Mac Baracael netted 13 pts off the bench ... Sean Anthony collected 8 pts 11 rebs 2 assts ... GlobalPort massacred Kia off the boards 65-37 and had more 2nd chance pts 21-10 ... Markieth Cummings led Kia with 37 pts @globalportph @pbaconnect @sp3_official #pbagovernorscup2017

Host Lebanon downs the Philippines 106-87 in the FIBA Asia Cup tonight ... Terrence Romeo led Gilas with 19 pts including 9 of 9 free throws while Matthew Wright hit 12 and JuneMar Fajardo 13 ... Jayson Castro finished with 13 pts 7 assts ... Lebanon outrebounded Gilas 44-29 and had more assts 27-17 ... Fadi El Khatib paced Lebanon with a tournament high 36 pts as 6-11 naturalized import Norvel Pelle, who was born in Antigua and holds 3 passports of different countries, was unstoppable with 23 pts 13 rebs 9 blks ... Gilas won its 1st 3 games and has now lost 2 in a row ... the Philippines plays China for 7th place tomorrow night ... in a high level competition, it's obvious the Philippines can't just train for 15 or even 30 days while other nations prepare for months ... Gilas will be tough in the first few games but once it's been scouted, there's no Plan B, no adjustments because of limited training time ... how to solve this problem is in the hands of the SBP and PBA @fiba @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @smartgilas #fibaasiacup2017 #labanpilipinaspuso

Will Gabe Norwood (left with coach Chot Reyes) stop Fadi El Khatib (right) when Gilas takes on Lebanon in the FIBA Asia Cup tomorrow? Fadi is 38 (according to FIBA although some sources claim he's 37) and the tournament's leading scorer with 23 a game ... Fadi shot 33 vs New Zealand and 30 vs Chinese Taipei ... a win over host Lebanon will put the Philippines in a battle for fifth on Sunday likely against China @fiba @smartgilas @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @gnorwood5

Thanks for this post, boxing coach Edito Villamor

Gilas bows out of title contention as the Philippines is blown out by South Korea in a 118-86 masacre in the KO quarters of the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon early this morning (Manila time) ... South Korea shot 67% from the field, compiled 34 assts and drained 16 3s in routing Gilas .,, Terrence Romeo hit 22 pts in the 2nd period to keep the Philippine hopes alive but the Koreans dropped a 29-13 bomb in the 3rd quarter to break the contest wide open ... Gilas displayed lack of aggressive defense in defending ball-picks and down screens as the Koreans went berserk in offense ... tough and painful loss but the Philippines will bounce back, the heart still beats and we remain proud of our warriors! Gilas has 2 more games to play in trying to finish #5 ... #fibaasiacup2017 @smartgilas @fiba @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas

TV5 all set to work the Philippines vs South Korea game at the FIBA Asia Cup! Pre-game discussion starts 11pm with Sev Sarmenta, Ryan Gregorio and Eric Menk then Magoo Marjon and I will take care of game proceedings with tipoff at 1130pm! Hold on to your seats! It'll be a wild ride! @sports5center @fiba #fibaasiacup2017

Whenever the Philippines and South Korea square off in basketball. it's always an emotional battle. There's a lot of history, if not bad blood, between the two Asian hoop powers. Filipino fans will never forget nor forgive South Korea for beating the Philippines 69-68 at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, 74-66 at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and 70-68 at the 2011 FIBA Asia Cup ... the opportunity to pay back South Korea for all those heartaches is something Gilas won't hesitate to seize at the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon tonight ... the Filipino crowd will be back to cheer for Gilas (top) as the Philippines goes up against Korea's Sekeun Oh (below left) and Jonghyun Lee (below right) ... Gilas will need to play a near perfect game but it's doable ... Lebanon and New Zealand exposed the Koreans weakness in transition defense and Gilas must run like the wind ... Gilas has to attack Korea's man-zone aggressively and storm the gaps ... Gilas outside shooters will be marked men so that will open opportunities for Japeth, Christian, Raymond and if he's ready, JuneMar to weave their magic inside ... Korea is averaging 26.3 assts which is reflected in shooting 50.4% from the field so Gilas must block out the passing lanes and force Korea to play one on one ... Gilas has to be smart in giving up fouls, can't afford to get into early penalty and remember that Oh shoots a higher % from the floor than the line so you make him earn his points from the stripe ... it will come down to heart and coach Chot knows how to bring out the best in every 1 of his players ... it will be a war to end all wars as Gilas fights to advance to the semis @smartgilas #fibaasiacup2017

Here's a photo grab of what GIlas' Fil-German sensation Christian Standhardinger's agency YouFirst posted on twitter last Friday to announce the 6-8 forward/center has agreed to play for the defending champion Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in the ABL next season ... the ABL runs from November to March so if Christian applies for the PBA draft late this year, he won't be able to see action until the 2nd conference ... this was also reported in the German website which carried an interview story with Christian expressing his views about Gilas and the Philippine experience ... he said he's happy to be able to make Filipino basketball fans happy, his Gilas stint has made his Filipina mom Elizabeth Santos Hermoso incredibly proud and he's excited that even with only a month playing for Gilas, he's now asked for autographs and photos whenever he's in a shopping mall! He loves it that Filipinos are basketball-crazy all over the world @smartgilas @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @c.standhardinger

Gilas survived a 2nd half meltdown to beat Qatar 80-74 and barged into the quarterfinals with a 3-0 sweep of Group B in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon tonight ... Qatar outscored the Philippines 47-39 in the 2nd half but couldn't bring down Gilas despite playing without Christian Standhardinger and JuneMar Fajardo ... Qatar shot better from the field 47.5% to 39.4% and had more inside points 42-22 and fastbreak pts 16-12 but Gilas had more triple conversions 15-6, more rebs 42-34 and more assts 23-16 ... Matthew Wright (top left) was red hot with 25 pts including 7 of 12 3s while Gabe Norwood (top right) excelled on both ends with 10 pts 7 rebs 5 assts 2 blks in 26:17 mins ... Japeth Aguilar (below left) had 3 pts 6 rebs 3 assts but wasn't as aggressive in chasing down shots because of fouls ... Calvin Abueva (below right) went 0-of-4 from the floor but compiled 5 rebs 3 assts before hurting his ankle on a slip after 12:18 mins of play ... let's hope Calvin, Christian and JuneMar will be ready to play against the winner of Japan-South Korea in the KO quarterfinals on Wednesday ... if Gilas advances to the semis, it will likely battle Iran and if it proceeds to the final, it will engage either Australia or New Zealand ... photos taken from @fiba ... #fibaasiacup2017 @smartgilas @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas
