The Kitchen  Center for video, music, dance, performance, film and literature founded in 1971.

Next week, we’re proud to present Leon Vynehall’s US debut of his immersive live show of “Nothing Is Still”; a new release on @ninjatune and lyrical ode to his grandparents’ immigration to NYC from the U.K. in the 1960s. In creating this deeply personal, atmospheric evening, Vynehall crafts one story told over three separate mediums. He’ll be joined by London-based leftfield and jazz artists Sam Beste on piano/synth, Rob Mullarkey on bass, and Will Ritson on drums. Tix on-sale now!!!

We are very excited to have Trajal Harrell back again the week; this time reimagining the hoochie koochie—an erotic dance first popularized by the Syrian dancer Little Egypt—in his new work, “Caen Amour.” At 7pm and 9pm for two nights only, the theater becomes a crossroads of a contemporary hoochie koochie show, fashion runway, and dance laboratory; stage, catwalk, and dressing room; a museum piece for the historical imagination.

Presented as part of the Crossing The Line Festival, produces by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)

Join us tonight at 7pm for a free screening program of historical and contemporary experimental short films from India curated by filmmakers Shai Heredia and Shumona Goel. These films by Pramod Pati, Ruchir Joshi, SNS Sastry, and Goel & Heredia offer a small window onto India’s extensive and eclectic avant-garde cinematic landscape, while also connecting to themes explored in Chitra Ganesh’s exhibition on view now, such as the organization of the self in relation to the organization of the city, and others.

Shai Heredia, filmmaker and founding director of EXPERIMENTA, the moving image art biennial in Bangalore, will present this program in person. @shaiheredia @chitraganeshbkny @experimentaindia (stills from Abid by Pramod Pati)

Join us tonight at 7pm for a free screening program featuring People Mover by Michael Amstad and Marte Eknæs, accompanied by John Smith’s Blight, 1994–96, and Charles Atlas & Karole Armitage’s From An Island Summer, 1983–84. Utilizing distinct visual languages, the three films are connected through the topics of the constructed urban space, movement, and flexibility. The program is a journey through different emotional states and atmospheres, guided by each film’s compelling use of soundscapes and music. This program was curated by Eknæs and Amstad for Grüner Salon, Volksbühne in Berlin last March, and this is the first screening of People Mover in the US. #peoplemovervideo @infomarte @echtcoolerhund @theotherjohnsmith #charlesatlas @karolearmitage

Our fall season begins this week! Join us this Thursday evening 6-8pm for the opening of the exhibition “Her garden, a mirror” by Chitra Ganesh. These new works in printmaking, sculpture, and video continue Ganesh’s exploration of gender and power in a futurist imaginary, taking as a point of departure the utopian, sci-fi novella “Sultana’s Dream” from 1905 by Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. @chitraganeshbkny #chitraganesh
