Brew story: This is a story of the original Belgian brew taking a leaf from the American Indian Pale Ale. As the hoppy pale coloured quencher started gaining popularity, the Belgians started brewing the Belgian IPA, which is still evolving. Byg Houblon is well-balanced on the bitterness and is cleaner with a considerably hoppy palate.

Tasting notes: Medium-bodied with a burst of citrus hoppy aromas and fruity esters. It is quite cloudy with a beautiful heal retention

Best paired with: Chef recommends the spiced notes of signature dishes Ajwaini Fish Tikka and Monster Chicken Wings for this summer brew

Introducing the Byg Belgian Wyt

A style of beer born centuries ago in Belgium, the cradle of wonderful experimental brews, witbier literally means ‘white beer’ in Flemish. The wit has its roots in the monasteries in the region east of Brussels, including the village of Hoegaarden. As Belgium colonised various parts of the world, foreign spices began to be introduced into the brewers’ recipes, giving the witbier a distinctive flavour. However, by the 20th century, the witbier was losing popularity fast, thanks to the spread of pale lagers. Its decline resulted in a complete end to all witbier production in 1960. But, Pierre Celis, a milkman who grew up around Hoegaarden refused to let his beloved witbier die. In 1966, he built a tiny brewery named De Kluis (The Cloister) with old equipment and restarted production of witbier. The revival spread over the next half century, and today the Belgian Witbier is found on menus across the world.
Its light body and distinct flavours make it a favourite summer brew. In India, its notes of orange and coriander make it familiar to the Indian palate, making it an all-season brew here.

Back in 1500s in Germany, malts used to be dried over a wood fire. The aromas of the wood used in the process was imparted to the malts, resulting in very smoky brews. In German 'rauch' means smoke, hence the name 'smoke beer' came to be.
As the process itself changed over time, this smoky character was lost but a few breweries in Germany kept their tradition alive. Today, Rauchbiers are enjoying the revival with the global craft movement gaining steam.

Think of the flavour of a sublime peaty single malt or imagine what liquifiedbacon tastes like and you'll have a pretty accurate idea of the Byg Brewski Brewing Company Rauchbier. Our style gets its distinctive flavour from the use of two different smoked malts - Beechwood smoked and Maple Smoked. In spite of it's relatively dark appearance , the Rauchbier is a delightfully light beer which kendrit self well to the casual beer drinker too.
