Helicopters airlifted stranded families from rooftops and dam gates were thrown open as incessant torrential rain brought fresh havoc Thursday to the Indian state of Kerala where about 100 people are feared dead.
Hundreds of extra troops were deployed in the southern state, a major tourist hotspot, as the government issued a “red alert” over the region’s worst floods in decades.
State authorities said the confirmed death toll was 72 but officials and media reports said up to 30 more people were feared dead on Thursday in landslides and as rivers burst their banks, flooding scores of villages.
At least eight people were reported dead and 15 others, including a three-month-old infant, were trapped inside three houses hit by a landslide near an irrigation dam in Malappuram district, the Hindu newspaper said.

Dubai Customs doesn’t spare any effort to further protect the brand owners’ rights and prevent counterfeiting. The Memorandum of Understanding that it signed with the Brand Owners’ Protection Group GCC & Yemen (BPG) last April supported its efforts in this regard, and helped promote bilateral co-operation and the exchange of relevant information in order to counter piracy.
Seized counterfeited goods can be recycled to be used for other purposes following environmentally friendly procedures and measures as part of Dubai Customs green initiative.
These protective measures and procedures help protect original products and belittle any chances of competition from counterfeited products. Dubai Customs has made a total of 130 intellectual property seizures in the first half of 2018 that had a value of AED 35.5 million. #dubai #customs #products #goods #happening #breakingnews #uae #airport #fake #police #abudhabi #newspaper #world #thegulftoday @dubaicustoms

Seven persons of a Gulf family sustained minor to medium injuries and a 2-year-old child was critically wounded in a traffic accident.
The accident happened on Thursday morning near the Wathba bridge leading to Abu Dhabi.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director of Traffic Department of the Abu Dhabi Police, the preliminary investigations attributed the incident to a collision by a pick-up vehicle onto the family’s car while changing a lane.
The driver of the car tried to avoid the collision by the pick-up vehicle, but the car crashed to the iron barriers.
The command and control centre of the operations department received a call reporting the incident.
Police patrols and ambulance were then dispatched to the location.
The injured were transferred to Al Mafraq Hospital.
The place was secured and the accident was reconstructed.
Al Suwaidi called on the drivers to exercise caution and to make sure that the road is free while changing lanes. #accident #tragedy #happiness #photography #picoftheday #abudhabi #family #injury #hospital #ambulance #horror #love #thegulftoday @adpolicehq

Belgian flower growers bested the summer's blistering heat to lay out 500,000 blossoms on the central square of Brussels, in this year's edition of the world famous flower carpet.
As Europe endured one of its hottest summers on record, organisers worried that the heat would prevent the flowers from blooming. "It has been extremely difficult. Until 10 days ago, people were afraid that we were not going to have enough flowers. Luckily, in the last two weeks the weather changed, producing new, fresh flowers," said Troch Peters, a Belgium-based flower wholesaler.
Despite the concerns, organisers once again arranged an 1,800 square-metre flower carpet on the city's landmark Renaissance town square, which this year drew inspiration from the Mexican region of Guanajuato.
In the carpet's design a bird, commonly found in indigenous Mexican embroidery, is surrounded by illustrations of Mexican fauna and flora. #brussels #happening #belgium #newspaper #flowers #love #art #grandplace #market #picture #roses #thegulftoday @reuters
