BEACON  A community-led campaign to make Washington, DC the most influential and supportive city for entrepreneurs in the United States

Join us June 27th for the launch of our 2018-2019 @thebeacondc Grant Program! With the support of the Office of Mayor Muriel Bowser, BEACON will award $50,000 to local "ecosystem builders" who design programs and initiatives that support DC's women founders. Grants are designed to incentivize collaboration and inclusivity in response to challenges faced by local business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. The launch event will feature an overview of the grant application process, a panel of past awardees, and plenty of time to mix-and-mingle with the city's ecosystem builders and entrepreneurs! Visit the link in our bio to RSVP today!

We are excited for the upcoming Dolphin Tank pitch competition, in collaboration with @springboardent! Thank you Thompson Coburn LLP for your support of BEACON! We appreciate you supporting DC’s women business owners through the Thompson Coburn Women’s Initiative. #thanks #supportwomen #beacondc

Today kicked off the start of our mentorship-matching + management program in partnership with @getwerkin - a woman + LGBTQ-owned company that makes it easy to match, track, and schedule convenings + "missions" with sponsors and sparks. Over 100 participants have been on-boarded for a free, six-month program that includes both offline and online features. @getwerkin stresses that "sponsors are connecting their sparks" by taking traditional mentoring to next-level active engagement. A big THANK YOU to @google for hosting us, as well as the Resources + Opportunities Pillar of the BEACON Board for bringing such a dynamic program to our community. We look forward to engaging with our cohort over the next few months and sparking new connections, witnessing business growth and building a robust community of local founders!" #ladyboss #getwerkin #beacondc #mentorship #sponsors #sparks

This past Thursday, we attended the SACC-DC Women’s Leadership Forum at the Swedish Embassy. The discussion shared various practices to level the playing field for women and men in the corporate world, as well as different approaches used in Sweden and the U.S. The conversation also touched on the #metoo movement, and ways to educate the next generation on issues of gender inequality. We enjoyed hearing remarks from Sweden’s first female Ambassador to the U.S. - Karin Olofsdotter, as well as VP of Risk Management at @livetpaskanska - Zoe Markwick, Director of Women’s Global Leadership Initiative - Gwen Young, and moderator, Victoria Roberts - VP and General Manager of Bloomberg BNA. We hope that more conversations like this can occur, so that future women business leaders will receive the pay, treatment and respect they deserve.

There may be an entrepreneur on stage, but a cast, crew & orchestra pit all work together to make the production a success. This and similar themes resonated the halls of the @unfoundation as we shared insights on the challenges and successes of DC’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. During “Building Accessible and Inclusive Small Business Ecosystems” hosted by @aliceconnects, @thebeacondc shared findings from its recent publication, “Building Inclusive Ecosystems with Intentionality,” and gained insight through panel discussions on “The Status of Capital in the Capitol” and “Creating Impact and Support for Founders.” We were in good company alongside @1776vc, Project 500, @halcyon_inspires and other change-makers dedicated to advancing entrepreneurs in DC and beyond. Thank you @aliceconnects for the opportunity - we’re thrilled about the virtual resources you provide for entrepreneurs - anywhere and at anytime! #inclusiveecosystems #beacondc #unfoundation #alice

This morning, we met with the #WEAmericas International Visitor Leadership Program at @worldlearning where we shared insights from “Building Inclusive Ecosystems with Intentionality.” The group was comprised of various business owners and business leaders in South America, where we discussed how companies and governments can create better initiatives and opportunities for female entrepreneurs. Thank you again for having us for such a great discussion!
