Tag someone who breathes oxygen... So one last one video for photo developer chemical week but first I wanted to say thanks everyone for your support and so many kind words in the comments 🙇 it means the world to me 😊. As I near 2000 followers I've decided to do another giveaway once I reach it so stay tuned and tag your friends.
With that out of the way this is a short clip of mercury chloride crystallizing after being melted, difficult since it tends to immediately boil/decompose and leave the slide in the form of toxic vapors. It crystallizes rapidly too so it was a challenge to record. I also got a comment saying these round pics and videos would look better on a white background, so I inverted the colors on the first half of the clip then reversed it in normal color for the second half. The black background is the rubber of the microscope eyepiece, but I could try to turn it white in post processing, so let me know if you have an opinion on it. The picture is mercury chloride formed from an evaporated solution that I posted a while back, just to compare to how it looks different compared to melting.
Mercury chloride was used in the collodion process as a photographic intensifier to produce positive pictures (it also used silver Nitrate and sodium thiosulfate that I posted earlier this week). The collodion process of the 1800s, was one of the first high quality duplication processes I.E. negatives, and greatly reduced the required exposure time, replacing the first publicly photographic process, the daguerreotype. Applied to a negative, the mercury chloride whitens and thickens the image improving shadows and creating a pseudo positive image.
It was also used to treat syphilis until less toxic medicines and antibiotics were discovered.
Wow this post is very long I applaud you for reading this far 👏👏👏. No theme this coming week, gonna work on reopening and updating my etsy shop 🏪 💲💸
