Last night, I had the honor & pleasure of experiencing traditional #Fado and a "Portugese dinner", with the most famous Fado singers in the world (...by chance).
We were eating in a 17th century castle and dinner lasted just over 5 hours, well past midnight. The candles on the table burned down to the base, and the temperature in the castle slowly crept up... as the 9-10 singers (who were eating all around us) got up and approached the guitarists, to express their passion in sets of 2-3 songs each. We didn't realize we were in the presence of 'greatness', until our waitresses explained the significance of all the singers secretly coming together on this one night (as a tribute for the victims of a recent national tragedy). The food was amazing and only served to to complement the singers' passion. It was a very special night and one to remember, with great friends and colleagues (2nd video). 🎼 #Portugal #Lisbon #Music
✳️ "Fado (meaning 'destiny or fate') is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia. Today, fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. 🙏🏽 #Grateful
