St Columba Falls State Reserve, 60 Great Short Walk - It may be a short 30 minute drive from St Helens, and a short 15 minute walk to the falls, but those are the only short things about this experience.
The standout is the falls: at more than 90m, one of Tasmania’s highest. The walk to the base of the falls is definitely another highlight. It takes you through cool and shady rainforest that has some of the tallest tree ferns you’ll see anywhere. Once at the lookout you’ll crane your neck as you watch the South George River tumbling down in a delightful series of steep cascades. Return uphill via the same track.

And this beauty from @glenn_photographer is just downstream! Thank you for sharing with us Glenn!

The reds, blues and greens of Flinders Island. Makes you want to go there!

@tscharke said “The amazing colours of Flinders Island as seen from Sawyers Bay. One of my favourite seascape destinations. Mount Strzelecki can be seen in the distance.” Thank you for sharing with us Luke!

The beauty of Mount Roland from an unusual perspective.

The stunning backdrop to the Kentish Municipality, Mount Roland is a landmark that can’t be missed if you’re travelling in the northern half of Tasmania in the area around Sheffield. Its ever changing colours reflecting the weather conditions and light make it a popular subject for photographers, professional and amateur alike. Walking tracks take you right up to the summit where spectacular views reward the adventurous.

Russell Falls is one of Tasmania’s most treasured places. The falls delight every visitor and can be reached by a very easy track that suits wheelchair users and those with strollers.

You can return from the falls via the same track or follow the creek back by crossing the bridge below the falls.

@atulhaldankar captured this beautiful image of the walk to the falls during a recent visit. Thank you for sharing with us Atul!

Echidnas, or spiny ant eaters as they are sometimes known, are a common sight in Tasmania. They are particularly common in dry open country on the east coast and are also found on open heathlands and in forests and can sometimes be seen slowly wandering along roadsides in its characteristic rolling gait.

This little one was captured by @vertigrator and we thought it is too cute not to share!

A view of the Fossil Cliffs on Maria Island that’s pretty special.
@tscharke shared this capture and described it like this: “That time I shot a sunrise on Maria Island and the cloud made it look like Bishop and Clerk mountain was erupting. One of my favourite patches of @tasmania.” Thank you for sharing with us Luke!

Ancient rocks turned sideways, intriguing sea caves, shipwrecks, humped hills covered in wildflowers, and astonishing Aboriginal cave middens, are just a few of the features of this beautiful coastal park.

Here a view of the rock pools, lichen covered rocks and hills and ocean beyond are beautifully captured by @vertigrator Thank you for sharing with us Craig!

The lower parts of the Mount Field National Park, famous for Russell Falls, have much more to offer. The Three Falls Circuit, one of our 60 Great Short Walks takes in not only Russell Falls, but also some of the other natural features of this section of the park. Most do the circuit anticlockwise, starting with the short walk to Russell Falls, and then climbing to the beautiful Horseshoe Falls.

“This must be a National Park for the people for all time.” So declared Gustav Weindorfer from the summit of Cradle Mountain in 1910. It is now one of Australia’s most famous national parks, protecting a grand glaciated landscape and the wonderful flora and fauna it contains.

In winter, snow turns it into a magical playground. Here @lovethywalrus captured its spell near the Dove Lake boatshed on a day popular with many visitors!

Narawntapu National Park is a place of peace for people and wildlife alike. It stretches from the low coastal ranges to the long Bass Strait beaches, and includes an historic farm, a complex of inlets, small islands, headlands, wetlands, dunes and lagoons, all with an amazing variety of plants and animals.

Anthony Robertson shared this great image of the Springlawn Lagoon with us, thanks Anthony! “Was hoping the sun would break through, but cloud hid its rise over the horizon. “
