araya rasdjarmrearnsook's works deal with very heavy themes such as death, mortality and gender, but they are always suffused with warmth and an incredible humanity. at her solo show at @100tonsongallery, i was drawn to this installation at the back of the gallery, depicting an all-white sculpture of araya curled up inside a silvery shell which at once reminded me of art-historical representations of 'the birth of venus'. it could also be a cloud, a cave, an ovary... at her feet is a brown dog, none other than namtaan, one of araya's very first dogs who sadly passed away when she was performing at documenta this year. she didn't get a chance to say goodbye in person, so this work is an elegy and farewell for namtaan. as a dog lover myself, i immediately understood, and could not help but be moved by the tenderness of these two forms, curled up next to each other in loving companionship.
