New Yorker Yannick Benjamin is an Advanced Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers head sommelier at the University Club and co-founder of Wine on Wheels @wineonwheelsnyc .
In 2003, a car accident left Benjamin paralyzed below the waist. He quickly adapted, outfitting his wheelchair with a table that allows him to continue to perform the tasks required of his profession.

Beyond the world of wine, Benjamin works tirelessly on behalf of his nonprofit organization, Wheeling Forward, which he started with Alex Elegudin in 2012. Their mission is to provide guidance and resources to disabled individuals, focusing on education, employment, wellness, community integration, housing acquisition, and personal fulfillment. A para-athlete, Benjamin competes in marathons to raise money for his advocacy group.

This year at #totc2018 Yannick was a presenter for the Educational Seminar “Inclusion in Hospitality: Why and How to Build a Longer Table”. His experience in hospitality spotlights the diversity of our industry, and the vitality of inclusion as the spirits and hospitality community continues to grow.

Seven years ago, Tales of the Cocktail® partnered with Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails (LUPEC) to start The Dame Hall of Fame®, a celebration of women who have made unique and lasting contributions to the global hospitality industry. Dame Hall of Fame® serves to acknowledge female leaders and encourage mentorship throughout the beverage and hospitality industries. Continuing this practice under new leadership and the newly formed Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, the foundation and LUPEC will recognize the work of five outstanding women in the industry by inducting them as the newest members of the Dame Hall of Fame®. •

These Dames helm award-winning cocktail programs, run worldwide non-profit organizations, create hundreds of jobs through business ownership, own and represent category-defining spirits brands, mentor and educate, and lead the vanguard of beverage and social innovation in the global beverage community. To Tales, a Dame is an inspiring, accomplished woman whose story deserves to be told and toasted, someone others aspire to be. •

2018 Dame Hall of Fame Inductees were - Brooke Arthur, Abigail Gullo, Paige Aubort, Monica Berg and Señora Carmen Alicia Villarreal Trevino - five truly remarkable women who have made unique and lasting contributions to the global hospitality industry. —

Brace Yourself: Injuries are Coming
• •
This year at #totc2018’s inaugural Beyond the Bar we had Amie Ward (@thehealthtender) lead a how-to for hospitality workers on the benefits of taping and bracing with kinesiology tape. •

In this workshop Amie reviewed the science behind acute and chronic injuries, and showed us how kt bracing is a as method to provide support, increase circulation, and promote healing for these aches and pains.
Working behind the bar can lead to further back pain, and Amie knows best! Amie’s expertise in the industry- running a successful bar program at @rbarbaltimore made this training so impactful! From wrist and shoulder issues to the all time favorite- bum knee, Amie showed us the light. •

This workshop was free for Tales attendees and the local NOLA community, and we even left with some kt tape ourselves and the knowledge to help heal our bodies while working long hours.

It’s brunch somewhere! And who knows how to shake something up better for those hungry weekenders than the team at @clydecommon. Winner of Best American Cocktail Bar at the 2018 Spirited Awards, Clyde Common’s @jeffmorgen runs the bar & @reverendbanjo the bar manager.
If you’re anywhere in the PDX area- be sure to cozy up to the bar and grab and Long Goodbye for us😉.

Tales of the Cocktail 2018 may be over- but your swag lasts forever! If you missed our merch stand during the week, have no fear! Tales of the Cocktail Foundation has teamed up with @bayou_brands to harbor all our Tales gear.
Stay tuned for details!

They slinged drinks together in New York and reunited at #totc2018 for The OG Duo: Abigail Gullo & Jonathan Pogash Pull some Daiqs.
Pogash, also known as @thecocktailguru teamed up with Abigail at her home bar @comperelapin where they served daiquiris, reminisced about the past and did what they do best: engage with their guests through stellar conversation and service. •

We love Dynamic Duo’s because it allows our local New Orleans spirits community to team up with friends and mentors from across the country and the world! 📸 by Cory James Photography @coryjamesphoto

As a former bartender at Reverend JW Simpson in London, Stephanie Simbo brings her cocktail expertise to the world of Social Justice. She is the founder of Beyond Bars Institute an into work program in South Africa that rehabilitates formerly incarcerated women. The program leads to pre-employment hospitality training and a sustainable employment.

A WSET and Authentic Carribean Rhum graduate, former Junior Bartender at the Purl London too, and self-described “daiquiri woman,” Stephanie became accidentally enamored with bartending while working as a waitress in Paris in 2012. Soon, Stephanie became interested in the possibilities presented by unusual spirits, classic mixes and new flavor profiles.

2016 marked the year of her first cocktail book: Gastronogeek 2. A perfect blend of the Geek culture and mixology, welcomed warmly by the French public selling more than 30,000 copies. But also the start of her social enterprise: Beyond Bars.

Tales 2018 saw Stephanie present at three phenomenal Educational Seminars this year: T.I.A. This is Africa, #SEDTalks, Straight Up with a Twist on Mental Health, and Dollars of Diversity. Thank you, Stephanie for being a pioneer in social justice for the spirits industry and beyond!
